V&H slip-ons and decel pop clarification
i have purchased a new 2014 Nomad 1700. it is currently being shipped to me. i will do break-in and put some miles on it completely stock but, among other things, i plan to change stock exhaust to V&H slashcut slip-ons... mostly for improved sound. on this forum, i have read what appears to be a lot of problems with decel-pop after switching to aftermarket exhaust. one solution that has been suggested and seems to work pretty well is adding a throttle body gasket (thunder mfg). (note: for now, i do not have plans to modify the intake side (BAK) or add a fuel management module, just slip-ons).
if i installed new muffler gaskets and made sure i had no exhaust leaks, is this decel pop something i should expect for all 1700s after adding aftermarket mufflers, particularly V&H? should i just go ahead and order the gasket OR should i break the bike in, switch out the mufflers and then see what happens? is the gasket the next step in the "fix"? it sounds like some of you guys just "live with it". i don't want to do that if i can resolve it. at any rate, i appreciate your input and help.. thank you in advance. dave Login or Register to Remove Ads |

FIRST OFF...plug up the Kleen air system inlet. This is located at about the 11 oclock position in the right side air box in the black back side. This in of itself will go a looooooooooooooooong way to minimize decel pop.
These 1700's vary quite a bit in the amount of decel pop so the throttle body gasket is a good addition. Intake leaks not only can be a source of decel popping but will also have a negative affect on performance. You are welcome to call my shop for more info 954-455-9665 Florida RACNRAY

Decel
I've heard it said, that the bike, even with stock pipes pops, you just don't hear it because the stock exhaust is so restrictive. The only time I really have a problem is going down hill, in a lower gear (engine braking). If I don't want to bother the neighbors I just pull the clutch in as I approach the stop sign.

As far as plugging the hole. Where is it? Right side backing plate or left under the filter. It was easy to find on my 05 Nomad, I couldn't readily see it on my Vaq.

JayC,
Inside the right side cover, 11 o'clock position, on the backing plate. Hope that helps. Ride safe, Smokier

Thanks, I'll check it out. What did you use to plug it?

Can you show on the parts diagram what you plugged and what did you use to plug it?

find hose 92192a from the air switching valve to the back of housing 11038a which is right side air filter case .. take the case loose .. pull hose off nipple .. plug with rubber plug/bolt/marble/ then put back together or just plug the hole with whatever fits tight and wont fall out .. that hose has suction on it not pressure ..if u disconnect the hose from nipple make sure u plug the nipple so u don't pull in unfiltered air into the intake
on mine I drilled a 19 mm hole there and fitted a 3/4 hose with a filter to add xtra air at higher r p m .. it works .. filter cost @ 15 bucks |

thank you all for your input... i appreciate the help on this forum. needless to say i am quite excited about delivery of my new bike... should be here next week. I "stole" it by the way.... $9,999 for a brand new 2014 Nomad... won't be able to ride it for a while as there is too much snow but i have time the rest of winter to paint it and make some changes...
Happy 2016! dave |

Marble and zip tie. Zip tie is to keep the marble from going too far is/down the hose in the event it needs to come out... :) Ride safe, Smokier
