For anyone planning to come to the Sturgis Rally

Just a heads up for some of you that are planning to come to the Black Hills either for a vacation or for the Sturgis Rally. It seems like so many people come here from different parts of the country and get caught up in all the hype which sometimes impairs their judgement when it comes to their riding skills. Best advice I can give you to enjoy the Black Hills is to Slow Down! Every year there are some fatalities from people who want to make it a memorable experience, which is sad. I’m not preaching but speaking from experience since I live here and have enjoyed the Rally since the late 70’s.

Couple of other things. If you want to enjoy some Free hors d'oeuvres, then the First Gold Casino in Deadwood serves them beginning at 4:00 each day. Nothing much, just some finger snacks and some coffee and such. Also, Cactus Jacks (another Casino just down the road) serves free soda and ice tea during the day for people who come in. For the cheapest T-Shirts, try Coyote Claw’s which is on Mt. Rushmore road heading out of Rapid City towards Mt. Rushmore. I certainly haven’t found them cheaper anywhere else. For the best Chinese Buffet (In my opinion) is the Golden Fortune on East North Street across from K-Mart. For around $7 you can eat enough to last you for the whole day and it’s excellent food, if that is your bag. If money is no object then ignore the last paragraph.

Lastly, if anyone from the Kawanow forum has trouble with your bike you are welcome to give me a call. I don’t currently have a pickup (but can probably find one in an emergency) but I do have a table lift and most of the tools you would need (in my air conditioned garage) to fix you up and get you back on the road. Just PM me for my phone number if you like. I will be entertaining some of my friends from out of town (who are harley riders) but I will certainly take the time to help out the Kawanow forum members since I have received so much information and assistance from you folks after I traded my harley for my 2000 nomad FI. Remember, enjoy the Black Hills but please slow down. Ride Safe, Jody

And stay hydrated, not on booze, not even beer... better than 2 qt of water per day for each person. You won't even need to pee.

BLASPHEMER!

Just kidding Mac. Living where I do, you learn about staying hydrated real quick, and beer isn't the best way to do it. You learn that quick, too.

Great tips and a generous offer. Cool.
I don't go to sturgis except for when nobody's home. :)

For anyone planning to come to the Sturgis Rally

That's good of you Dakota and good advice. On my recent trips to Sturgis I found Deadwood was great because they don't jack up prices like they do in Sturgis. A cold beer in one of the casinos is the same all year.

Heat IS something to worry about. In 2007 I think it was 110F in Rapid City so water is the real deal.

For anyone planning to come to the Sturgis Rally

Hey just a related note. dakota is out west. For those that are coming from the east, I live in Sioux Falls on the east end of the state. I don't own a truck but have access to more than one, and a trailer if needed. I also have a yard big enough for more than one tent if you are so inclined. PM me if you want my cell number.
