You could wire it without but it is HIGHLY recommended that you use a Hoppy. It protects your bike from shorts and helps convert the wiring down to the four pin, unless you are thinking of wiring a round trailer plug.
The Hoppy is cheap ($45) compared to a fried wiring harness on the bike.

Got mine off of amazon

gadet, wrote just about anything you could want here:
http://www.gadgetjq.com/trailer.htm

i would use a hoppy, and I have.. he has it listed.

Since the bike is wired as Euro, and most trailers as they come are wired American, you either have to add lamps, or use one kind of converter or another anyway, so if you use this one, it can save you a ROYAL mess in the event of a trailer dead short.

Don't thank me, thank John...

Let me offer a couple of tips...

I suggest you splice into the taillight wiring harness under the seat for your electrical connections. If for some reason you ever need to replace the harness, it $20-$30 bucks, compared to $300 for the chassis harness. If you follow the harness coming through the rear fender under the seat, you'll see it ends at a connection with the chassis harness.

I spliced into the taillight harness and connected a 6-pin, rubberized connector which I routed to under the coolant recovery jug. I spliced the other half of the connector to the input wiring of the Hoppy power taillight converter. This is so I can remove the hitch and the wiring when I don't need it. I posted pictures and some how-to in the vendors/for sale section a month or two back.

I used the Electrical Connections relay system with the Hoppy 4-wire converter. This way the Trailer is totally isolated from the bike's wiring system and should something short out ( oh and that never happens with trailer wiring!!!) all that happens is the main fuse on the unit trips and the bike never sees a thing.
