I keep hearing about engine ice and was wondering as well. Not to hijack but is there a write up on how to best drain out the old to replace it with whatever is found to do the best at cooling the engine?

I read that how to, but didn't see any reccomendations on what to use. Really just looking to do a top off right now, is the Prestone 50/50 safe to use on ours?

I wouldn't use automotive coolant in my Nomad. I used the Kawasaki Alumacool, available at the dealer. You can use whatever you want, as long as it's safe for aluminum systems and contains no silicates.

This is what I used and have in my bike after I did the water pump:
Prestone Extended Life Prediluted Antifreeze/Coolant Premix. This is supposed to be safe for our engines.

I have always had great luck with Redline's Water Wetter. Run it in everything I have, from the Freightliner to the Vulcan.

With all the aluminum in today's automotive cooling systems almost all available coolant is aluminum safe, 50/50 is even better not just because it's premixed but they use distilled water so you have no minerals in the water to cause scale buildup.

Products like water wetter or ice break the surface Tension of the water so that the coolant mix penetrates deeper into the microscopic imperfections in the metal therefore working more efficiently and helping to reduce natural hot spots.

Oh and your extended life coolants usually have an electrolysis inhibitor (corrosion inhibitor). Electrolysis is the biggest enemy in an aluminum system, it affects iron too but aluminum is more prone to it because of it being less dense than iron.
