concern about TFI settings

I thought I was done with this subject but apparently not.

After reading borto's thread below and what he says about being dyno'd, I'm wondering if, with the TFI, I could be running too lean.

"well, just got my 08 back from the dyno. Just for a refresher, my bike is new, I got chucksters plate with the open k&n, power commander, ultimate baffles with the v&h pipes. he said the front cylinder was running way lean, rear was closer. said they jumped around a lot in the mid ranges. very lean on the top end. It took them 6 hours to tune. We talked about the baffles and he thinks they came out pretty good. 92 ish lbs of torque, so good just vulcanE and dkdixie! he said my mpg's should increase a bit as well since the mid range was running rich. I didn't get a chance to run it much tonight, only 15 miles home, but I tell ya, when I get on it, it sounds MUCH better, smoother and she goes! Yea, it was kinda pricey to get done, but... at least I know that it's at it's best that it can be, or the best that the dyno guy can do. I'll see what I get for MPG's here soon".


Here's what I posted for results and settings.

"I did the adjustments like I said I was going to do.
#1 pot to 2:30
#2 pot to 5:00
#3 pot at 1:00
#4 pot to 8:30 - 8:00

"the performance is great. I did an exact calculation and converted kms. to miles and ltrs. to Imp. gal.
I did one mileage check doing mostly around town, to the store and to work, .....and a little hwy riding {not much} total 106 kms. done for this check. Came out with 36 mpg. average from what I understand and have read.
The other mileage check I did was to fill the tank and hit the Hwy, set the cruise at 110 kms. per hour..... I traveled about 40 kms. on the #1 Hwy. turned around and headed back for a total of 80.7 kms. That trip worked out to ....if you can believe it,......50 mpg.
I was thrilled to say the least, but didn't believe it until I converted everything again and redid the math. But it all came out the same. I don't know if I believe it yet. But for the time being.... I'm a happy guy "

But that was then this is now. I'm always second guessing myself it seems. ........Doc, BD, macmac what have you got to say?

Just so the comparison is the same for our US friends....

50 mile per imperial gallon = right around 40 miles per US gallon.....

Ricky, I'm at sea level and the only difference in our settings is my #1 is at 3:15 - 3:30. I got 41 mpg on the highway riding single and 37 riding 2 up. 50 sure would be nice but I don't think it will ever happen with mine.

Comparing the PC III to a TFI isn't going to work well, but I really don't know by how much since I have only owned 2 TFI units.

I am not aware that the PC III can run ine cylinder different from another cylinder, but I haven't read up on a device I am not likely to see to work on either.

The TFI for sure has no way to enrichen one clyinder from another.

With the TFI the rear clyinder is likey to run a bit leaner since that cly is out of the wind more, but water cooling should assist in cooling the rear cly just the same.

I am at 550+ to apx 3,000 ft on average around here riding, and the best I ever got was 48 MPG's.

That is with V&H baggers and a probably blown out fiberglass packing, since I don't tinker around with the baffels, the TFI set a little less than most. A rightside only Caddman, Stock stones, Mobil 1 engine oil blended by me, for around here (colder), The same brand gear oil, and Desert Dawgs.. Which don't look like stream lining, but I guess maybe they do. (crash bar covers)

I lost 2 mpg's putting on the CT by Dunlop... That trade is by far better traction and handling. So now on 87 Oct I expect at the way I ride to get apx 44 to 46 MPG's, using a USA Gallon, what ever that is compared to any other fluid measure.

I figure if you got 50 MPG's you were riding side saddle

Thanks Cory, ;).....I'm going to run the tests again ASAP. It's suppose to rain next week but at my earliest convenience I'll check the Kms. traveled and the fuel used and post the results. I'll even scan the receipts and post those if I come up with approx. the same results.

I think he said his 50 mpg was for an Imperial Gallon. That's the same as 1.2 U.S. gallons.

Yes Bob 50 on Imp. gal. .....which would be close to 40 on your US gal.

Doc I have no beef....I had a concern that perhaps {going by borto's post that} I might be running too lean. But all things point to being just fine. All plugs are looking fine. It runs like "a bat out of hell". And at 40 mpg. {US that is} keeps me smiling. I am going to stay with 90+ oct..

I've decided to pay my buddy MAC to help me do a few things to my bike, one of which is a TFI.

Anyway, wondering how many of you that did the intake, TFI and exhaust are still running high test. Those of you who don't run high test what grade, and any issues?
