The fairing has also be redesigned (wider) to remain in scale to the new lowers, which are wider to accommodate the radiator and venting. Otherwise, the old bat-wing would have looked out of proportion.

I have a shorty-shield on my Ultra and get buffeting with my half-helmet. Not as bad as the Nomad was (and not nearly as bad as a Victory).

The venting is a short-throw upward at the bottom of the inner-side of the windshield. Easy to clean if it gets dirty.

Since you brought up Victory..........

I get buffeting on my Vision. You know, until I hit the button on my handlebars and move the windscreen. :)

That new vent sure is innovative. I mean, other than pretty much being a direct copy of the same vent Victory's been using on the Cross Country and Cross Country Tour for the past 5 years. :)

In all seriousness, I'd like to see the new H2O Harleys whenever the local dealer gets some in.

Well since Victory apparently invented the v-twin motorcycle, I can see how you'd say that Chris.

No buffeting at all on my ST, in any windscreen position. Not saying that to tout the ST, but it has puzzled me as to what causes it on the various motorcycles. It does not have a vented windscreen.

I get buffeting from having a short 6" windshield; and being short myself while wearing a half-helmet. I have considered a re-curve shield to see if it helps.

The buffeting doesn't bother me as much as bugs sling-shot over my shield into my face or neck. That can hurt like heck sometimes. Couple times I swore I was shot!

I get zero, as in 0, as in none, buffeting on my Cross Country Tour. And yes, many of the new features on HD have been standard equipment on Victory's for years. Now that HD has almost caught up I am sure that Victory will be raising the bar and HD will respond in a decade or so. And who knows, maybe HD will hire some designers and stylists instead of relying on Industrial Engineers to design their bikes.

Not Victory but maybe Indian (another Polaris company).

If Victory is so far out in front, and has gotten the bikes right, then why did you feel the need to do stage 1, which our dealer in Lansing also told me was needed to really enjoy the bike?

I think buffeting has less to do with the windscreen as much as the lower air flow or at least a combination of the 2. I had a 7 1/2" LRS flip on the Harley fairing on my Nomad and still got some buffeting until I made some larger (fork mounted) lowers. I have factory (Vic accessory) adjustable lowers on my bike. When I close them a bit (which lets more air through), I have to move the windscreen to eliminate the buffeting. When they're completely open (meaning almost no air gets through), I can run the windscreen as far up or down as I want and don't get any. All of this leads me to believe buffeting has more to do with lower air flow.

I think the more air you let through, the more you have to compensate for it. The XC/XCT has the under wind screen vent because the fork mounted fairing (any fork mounted fairing) lets air through. The Vision (with its full, frame mounted fairing) lets less air through so it doesn't need as much extra help.

I'm sure someone with a background in engineering will contradict me.

You don't NEED the Stage 1 just like you don't NEED 117 hp. (Would your bike be any less fun if it only had 100 hp?) It's just FUN to have more power. Why does the Bugatti have 1001 hp? It doesn't NEED it. My Vision powertrain is bone stock and I enjoy it plenty. I don't want to speak for Mike, but I'll bet he would enjoy his XCT just fine with the stock powertrain.

If the dealer told you the Victory needed the Stage 1 to "really enjoy the bike", he was just trying to drum up a sale.

Hey now... just pipe-down there a bit buddy! We'll come around in 5-years or so... but ten-years... you're just pushing it now!

That's animal cruelty, Long Trail Ale is healthier for a dog.
