Quiet down those V & H Baggers

First I must apologize for not getting pictures and no I am not going to pull the baffles back out to get pictures.

So, when I had the baffles out I installed the pin mentioned in other threads but used the poor mans version. I drilled the front end of the baffle and installed a piece of 3/8 inch mild steel rod. The rod was cut just about 3/8 of and inch longer than the diameter of the baffle. Using a hacksaw I cut an X on each end of the rod. I used a chisel and hammer on my bench vise anvil to spread the X on each end and then peened the ends down with the hammer.

Next I purchased both a package of fiberglass cloth and fiberglass mat from my local O'Rielly's Auto store. First, laying out the fiberglass cloth I cut a piece that out that would rap around the bare baffle 1 and 1/2 times. Then after cutting the fiberglass matting into, length wise, I wrapped the one half piece on the baffle. Then dividing the remainder of the fiberglass cloth I took a piece and wrapped it over the fiberglass matting material. I think it made about 2 1/2 wraps. I then secured the fiberglass using 4 pieces of small aluminum wire. Then I repeated the procedure on the second baffle and installed them.

I now have a much deeper sound and several dB's quieter that the stock baffles. I know this as we still have the stock pipes and baffles on Liz's bike and I compared the sound of my bike to hers.

Will the fiberglass burn out and the sound increase? Maybe some. Just for testing purposes I rode the bike about 300 miles with no ear plugs and found the lower pitch to be much less harsh on my ears. The pipes are still plenty loud if you rap them out but to me they have a much better sound.

The whole mod cost me less than $20.00 since I already had the 3/8 inch mild steel rod and aluminum wire to use. The fiberglass cloth and mat are found in the auto body repair section at your auto stores. Not counting the trip to the auto store the procedure took about 30 minutes to do by myself start to finish.

If you are wanting your V & H Baggers to be just a little bit quieter I think you will like this mod.

Jim

Any thing that makes loud pipes quieter is OK in my book. :)

Old Bikers, you got to have a baffle in order to quiet it down.

Don't need hearing aids yet Doc. Well I do but I rfuse to go there ;). 44 years in a loud wire manufacturing plant takes its toll on the hearing.
