Tire Sizes

If I have a bike that came stock with a 180/70x15 rear tire and I want to replace it but only three manufactures make a tire in that size, and I don't want ot go with any of them, how do I know what other size will fit.
This pertains to Cindy's 900 LT.
I know it is not Nomad related so move the post if you must.

You could go down a size if you wished and maybe find a tire brand you like. I doubt you would ever feel the difference.

What were the brands available TC? Probably Bridgestone was one of them. Might do as Steve said and drop a size and be able to find it in the brand you are looking for.

The brands I found were Bidgstone, Metzler, and Pirelli.
The bike came stock with Dunlop 404's and they are not listed anywhere? Not that I would buy them anyway.
What I wanted was an Avon Cobra but they do not make that size.
Steve, what would the next size down be? That would make the speedomter read even faster right?
What would the next size up be? That would make the speedometer a little slower right?
I went with the Pirelli MT 66. Hope it is a good tire. The reviews I read were all good.

Tim; the speedo will read faster if the tire is a smaller diameter,
A larger diameter will read slower.
You need a tire with a higher sidewall height, a 180/70/15 has a sidewall that is 70% of the width, a 160/80/15 has a sidewall that is 80% of the width.
Thats all good on paper, but you are still limited to the sizes that a manufacturer produces. Usually most tire companies have a chart that shows the tire dimensions and you can see how tall a tire is, then you can choose the best size to correct speedo error, but it may not be exactly the width your after. the tire width really has no bearing on changing anything, unless you go really narrow, then it won't carry the same load rating as a larger tire, and too wide a tire obviously won't fit in the swingarm or between the front fender.

If I figure this right then a 180/70 tire will have a sidewall of 126
A 170/80 tire will have a sidewall of 136.
The 170/80 will be narower by 10 and taller by 10.
Not sure what those numbers are. I know they are metric.
Can you tell me what they are.

The first number in a tire size, eg 150, 160, 180 etc is the width in millimetres, the 60, 70 , 80 etc, is the percentage of sidewall height, and the 15, 16, 17, etc is the rim size.
To me the overall height of a tire is more important than the width, a big fat tire is really of no use and doesn't serve an important enough purpose to warrant installing, unless you want to tell people you have a fatter tire on your bike.

Your not going to believe this CJ but after talking to Flavor at the Northeastern Rally I am really considering a CT when the Cobra on the rear wears out.

My pal Al was also impressed with Flavors car tire and how it handled the mountains. My tire is ready to replace and I think I'll try a car tire this time. I like the look of my whitewalls but I hate replacing tires every season as well. Im hoping that with a car tire I'll be able to get three seasons on it before replacing.

I checked three places and no one will mount a CT on a bike. I have 10,500 on my Cobra and just got the bike inspected and they said I have 6/32 I measured and I get 4/32
