20-40 is the "RECOMMENDED" viscosity just like 10-40 is Kawi's recommended vis for the 1700, yet that does not stop peeps from running 20-50 in their 1700's does it? The oil vis I would be worried about would be anything with a upper vis rating of 30 or below, otherwise anything werks. The Scouts recommended oil is 15w-60!!! And on Indians website that oil is also oked by Indian for the 111's.

There are many aftermarket oil companies that have been making 20-40 for those wanting/needing to stick with that recommendation, so ain't gotta go to the dealer for oil. As a professional tech I see no need to stick with what the manufacture says as those are always "recommended" viscosities. I have been runnin 15-50 BelRay. The guys out in Texas and those parts have found 20-50 to be "more gooder" (as my ole man would say) when they have temps like 105+. And a few have even used the 15-60 which I plan on using for the next oil change, tho it is Torco oil.

The Indians do come with better OEM tires than the 1700's, mine were Dunlop E3's. The original rear tire was replaced b4 it was completely worn out at about 13,000 miles, and the original front tire last 28,000 miles!!!

For instance, BMW has viscosity recommendations based on temperature ranges, with the API rating as well. With the Indian manual I saw, it was just one recommendation. Thing is, talking magnuson moss, if I used Mobil 1 20w-50 and something took a shite, they might reneg because I didn't follow their recommendation. Having ranges based on temps and API ratings seems a better idea. Kawasaki does this as well. As far as belt replacements, it should be at least double in mileage from what they recommend, more like 60K miles.

All that said, I was just curious. I might give up riding anyway. I've had 4 surgeries in the last 9 months, 3 for my spine and I don't know if it's a good idea with the risks. The last one was cervical fusion a few weeks ago. I had C4-6 done in 2012 and now C2-4. Last fall I had L4-5. I have more titanium in me than the ISS. Turning my head ain't what it used to be, at all.

----The manual states drive belt replacement at 30K miles.----
Just me....but I'd change belts @ 50K! 30K is just being too conservative....hell, gear belts or cog belts on the primaries on the Harleys last longer than 30K and its turnoing all the time....
At the dealership, 50K seemed to be a good compromise between wear on belt/sprocket and the price....
I ran a Phase III belt drive for almost 5 years with hardly any wear....just a little radiusing on the belts cogs....

Thanks Schoeney. I am riding a bit again. Neck still doesn't turn well, so I have to be real careful. It's been a tough year.

I tend to follow the manufacturer's schedule and judging by theirs, it's too much maintenance for what it is. Maybe it's an effort to keep the dealer's service departments in the black, but if you don't follow it under warranty you won't have one. I think the Indians are overpriced too and overweight.

Well, tonite I hit a mileage milestone on the Indian. It was 4yo June 20th, but tonite I clicked 75,000 miles,er, SMILES! Due to not ridin quite as much I am prolly not gonna duplicate the 100,031 miles in 5 years I racked on the Vaq, but I just enjoy this skoot so much.

You'll have to tell us more in the Off Topic area. I have been toying with the idea of getting a second bike. I'd keep my RT and get a cruiser. Been thinking about a FLHP or FLHTP as first choices, Road King as a second. I think the Indians are probably more reliable over the long haul and maybe easier to live with, but they are just as expensive and don't have quite the fit and finish of the HD. IDK. What's the belt life like on them and I've read the manual and it showed 30k mile replacement intervals on the Indian, which seems short and 20w-40 oil, which is an odd weight. Just like to get your insight into owning one. Look forward to your response.

I think even a short review here would be a positive thing. Most of us have moved on beyond the Nomad and Kawasaki's in general. As far as the challenger goes, I've heard they put off a lot of heat and they have a limited color availabilty. I wouldn't be interested in the 29k dollar model and the cheaper one only comes in gray. I have a silver motorcycle and I hate neutrals. I think they can do better that way.
