Mini apes.. How high ??

Right now I have Chuckster's 2" risers on my stock handle bars but would like to have a set of mini apes . I like the look better than that of risers . I've read many posts about them and all are very positive . I like where my arms are now but wouldn't mind an extra inch or two . I don't want to have to change the wiring or cables so from what I see 12" is the way to go with the stock riser . Should make it 14" ( if that's correct ) . Are there any recommendations as to the ones I need . Thanks for the help in advance !!

On a 1500 you can only go 10"s or so before you need a new front upper brake line. I did the Santee 11" bagger apes on my last nomad and had to change the brake line. As far as wiring you can get by without extending them up to about 14" s as long as you leave them outside the bars. Just installed a set of 14's on my 1500 and extended the front brake line and internally ran the wires extending them 12"s. I'm 5'9 and the 14's are shoulder height.

Thanks for all the info . I'm pretty sure the 12's are going to be what I want . I don't want the bars to be any higher than they are now . It's more for the look . Thanks for the heads up on the break line . I'll do some research and pick up an extension before I start tearing things apart .

Depending on the pull back the brake line may reach at 12" but I highly doubt it. You'll also have to run the clutch line behind the triple tree. If you find a local good ridge brake line dealer you can take you stock upper line and have them send it off to them. Cost about $50. Good ridge is local to me so I took mine to them and it took two days and $40

I just changed my handle bars last weekend. I went with 2 inch risers and 10 inch bars with a 6 inch pull back. I did internal wiring, so I had to add an extension to the wires. The clutch line had plenty of slack to install with it still in the triple tree. I was also able to leave the brake line in the triple tree, but it is stretched and has very little slack.

Would it be possible to see pics , if not where are your hands located in reference to your shoulders ( how tall are you ? )

I will have to try and get pictures tomorrow. The skies were clear when I left for work this morning, but had to ride through a monsoon on the way home. So I have my bike put up and covered rite now.

I am 6'2'' and my hands are just below shoulder height. The main thing I was looking for was the pull back, the height was an added bonus. It may be possible to go another inch taller if I took the hoses out of the triple tree, but as it is now, the front brake is at it's max length.

So with the set up I have, if using OEM risers (1''), then the bars would be an 11'' rise. Since I have 2'' risers, I went with a 10'' rise bars. So my final after market bar rise is 11''. And as said, it may be possible to go with a 12'' rise if you take the hoses out of the triple tree.

Hey , thanks a lot . That would be great . I really like that look . 10's or 11's may just do the trick with the oem risers . I'm 5' 9" and want the bars to be just below my shoulders .
I hate getting stuck in storms also . Sure puts you on high alert .

Here is my '01 1500 with 12" apes.
I kept all of the wiring and lines where they were, just changed the handlebars and it worked flawlessly.

Just a suggestion, if you ever plan on adding a fairing with a radio, you may need a set of bars with a wider base and pull back. I am not 100% sure on that. But it looks like Bud2rat was able to install a fairing with the bars he posted.

Also, the Amazon site says they are 12'' apes, but if you scroll down past Product Information to the Product Description, it has the bar rise as 10.20''. So if that is the actual rise then it is the same as the set I just installed.

This is what mine looks like with the fairing installed last week.
I'm still making modifications but it works.

I was actually looking to try that handlebar out as well to see how it feels on a long trip. I just took a 3 ride a day after I put my fairing on it and I was very impressed on how well the ape hanger and the fairing worked for me.

Gillisfire , appreciate your help . I'm stuck on the clear windshield . I love seeing the road ahead of me . Once I get my bars installed I'm going to find a set of bar mounted speakers to hook my phone up to . I found a gadget that I can power my phone too from the battery tender. When I bought the bike it had a pretty good fairing with stereo . I sold it to buy the windshield and brackets . Gives it a more nostalgic look .

Oracle , Looks good with both windshield and fairing . Very glad to hear that it worked out for you , oh , and I have to find me one of those cup holders ( ebay here I come ) .
