fuel pump issue

I have a 05 nomad 1600 with 50000 miles i went out to start it the other morning and it would not fire up. i had jusy rode it the night before. Never had this problem before always started first crank. I have had an issue with an odd noise which sounded like a high pitch noise louder than usual with the fuel pump. is there anyone who has had to replace the fuel pump or is there anyway to test it. It is getting fire to the plugs if I spray gas in it will start. I have checked all the fuses and they are good. Can a fuel pump be rebuilt it seems the cost of a new one is 490 dollars. looking for options before replace to avoid unnecessary 500 bills. Holiday weekend no bike Sucks
Any help would be appreciated

fuel pump issue

Mike: I also own a '05 1600 but I have not had a fuel pump issue yet. I did have a dead battery the other day. It started fine one day and then the next morning unhooked the battery tender and it tried but too weak. I jumped it and fired right up. Yours might not be battery, sounds fuel like issue. Fuel pumps are not re-buildable. yes they are $$$, Good Luck

Is there a fuel filter on the bike also when you unhook the fuel line coming out of the tank should fuel run out. I have had the tank off on several occasions before and never had a problem with fuel just running out constantly.

NO fuel will not run out when you take the tank off, it has a connector that has a quick dis-connect so no drippage.

OH yes it does from the tank side. I have never had to drain the tank before. But this time i did to keep the fuel from running everywhere.

It can be a worn ignition switch also, try turning it on and off and wiggling the key in the cylinder. This sometimes makes the connection to turn on the fuel pump, and you will hear the whine while it pressurizes. Its happened on my bike a couple times.

I believe i have found the problem in between the pump and the impeller of the fuel pump there is a o ring this o ring is split and pushed out causing the fuel to flow straight thru not allowing any pressure to build up. My question has any one else had this problem and how did they fix it? Can just the seal be replaced or does the whole pump need replaced. A seal would be a lot cheaper than a whole pump if it could be replaced.

I doubt anyone else has had this problem, fuel pumps are not a common repair on the Vulcans. Id assume you need to replace the complete pump, as I doubt they sell just the O ring. Before I did that Id see if you could match up an O ring and try to repair the pump before you replace it. Bearing suppliers are a good source for seals and O rings. Id check there first.

Try replacing this O ring... Normally you should be able to open the main feed line and NOT get more than 1 drop of fuel.

Injection fuel pumps work at far higher psi that carb pumps do, even the carbed Nomad pumps only run around 3 to 7 psi.

Not so on any other injected Nomads.

If you have a camera 'we' all would like to see clear pics of this.

The fuel pump on my 07 is whining so bad it drives me nuts. I can hear it over the motor and exhaust. i found one on Ebay for $50 used of a salvage bike.
Getting it [put on this week sometime. If you need a new one, and I am assuming you will. Check Ebay first.

My fuel pump has been whining for 5,000 kms. I will be taking it apart before I order a new one just to see if it is fixable. I am going to do that when the season is over at the end of October.

From everything I have heard, they are not rebuildable.
But if you do take yours apart, we would all like to see pictures of each step and the final teardown if that is possible.

No harm in taking a look before I order a new one. Maybe only the dealers say they cant be fixed and we go along with that ?
I am certainly going to take a look and determine that for myself.

Wise idea. Once this wasn't a topic and suddenly it is. I haven't had a problem with mine on either bike.

The one thing that seems certain is once they whine it isn't very long before they quit.

If you can document any details we would like it, even if that means nothing can be done.
