Oil leak on left side

I have a little "couple of drops when it is hot" oil leak on the LEFT side - it seems to be coming from between the chrome cover and the motor near the kickstand. Has anybody seen this before? I just did an oil change with a fresh crush washer as well as replacing the o-ring and end-gasket in the oil screen but that had did not clear it up. It had the same "couple of drips" leak before the change but now the couple of drops were fresh motor oil. I need to do a good job cleaning it down there so I can pinpoint this annoying leak.

Edited because I seem to have trouble differentiating right and left...

Are you sure its motor oil, Mine had a drip in exactly the same spot you describe and it was gear oil from the final drive. It travels up the driveshaft tube and drips out there. Smell it and see what it is. It could also be brake fluid from the clutch slave cylinder, thats another common problem.

Could be the clutch pushrod seal has come loose and it's leaking a little bit of oil. The clutch slave cylinder is also in that area, if it's brake fluid you're seeing.

if it's like my '02 it's leaking from the clutch release assembly. and it's oil not brake or clutch fluid. I used high temp RTV to rebuild the gasket and it seems to have stopped the leak. You'll have to take the cover off the lower engine/transmission assembly to get to it, this involves removing the foot rest, and the heal/toe shift pedals first. It's a much easier job than you'd think

Sorry, this might be better if I point out that I meant the leak is on the left side - not the right. My kindergarten teacher would be so embarrassed....

You did point out it was on the left side. That's where the clutch slave cylinder and clutch pushrod seal are located.

What do you mean by clutch fluid? The clutch assembly is bathed in the crankcase oil and the clutch hydraulic system uses brake fluid. It's one or the other, unless it's gear lube from the final drive.

Take the cover off and look to see where it is coming from. Easy to do. Mine had a similar slow drip where you are describing. It was a fitting on the clutch slave cylinder that CJ suggested a couple post back. I tightened it and no more problem.

I said clutch fluid because I've never had to do anything to mine in the 3 years I've owned it and have never looked to see what fluid it uses for the clutch hydrolics. I've had bikes that have used hydrolic clutch fluid and brake fluid hence me covering both in my response. My description of WHERE the leak was found was the important part of my post CJ :)

If there is any oil on the back of the kickstand, the odds are overwhelming that it is the clutch pushrod seal.

10-4 on the clutch pushrod seal directly behind the clutch slave cylinder. It will drip at the sidestand and can make quite a mess if it comes completely out of the cavity. Ask Trip. It's an easy fix.

I will get out and check that - of course the weather went from the 60°s to the 30°s here today - so I will get out there in the garage tomorrow or Wednesday. It looks like I just need to take off the right side cover and check the tightness of the three bolts that secure the clutch slave cylinder?

No, you will need to remove the slave cylinder, clean up the seal and cavity and apply high temp rtv or a good gasket sealant to the seal before pushing it back into the cavity. There is no shoulder to prevent pushing it all the way into the crankcase. Slide it back in until it is flush. Let it set up overnight before riding.

I will check it out - it should be pretty obvious if this is the source of my drippy problem. Thanks for the info!

Okay, I was just trying to clarify what you meant by clutch fluid. I've heard of people adding oil to their rear master cylinder, so I wanted to eliminate any confusion.
