What almost got you this week?

I almost T boned a motorcycle in my cage on saturday. I'm on a 60 MPH road and I have a green light. A car turns left in front of me, the car behind that one aslo turns left in front of me and a motorcycle follows the two cars and also turns left in front of me (all 3 vehicles have a "left turn yield on green light"). If you're on a motorcycle and you can't see whats comming, why would you pull out?

Didn't almost get me today, but I was behind a van at a 4way stop. He pulled out and a car coming from the left totally blew the stop, didn't even slow down. They avoided a collision because the van stopped before he got all the way out.

Glad I wasn't one person ahead in line, who know?

The usual. I was coming into work yesterday morning and a driver in a white car to my left cuts me off with at least two feet to spare while we're both going 50mph. Then hits the brakes to make a right turn. Of course a look in my rear view mirror shows no one behind me. These things happen so often these days that I don't have the energy to get upset anymore. I guess its old age or too many substandard drivers have finally worn me down so much I'm just thankful I can still dodge these knuckleheads.

I was riding yesterday and I came up on an intersection with the light green and I was making a right hand turn (which means I have the right of way) and a guy in a cage was making a left hand turn. He made the turn right in front of me and if I hadn't been watching him he would have clipped me. I still believe that intersections are the most dangerous place for us as motorcycle riders.

Good thread Dan!

What almost got you this week?

I almost got it twice yesterday.

Once was in a strip mall parking lot. One row of cars facing the buildings, the other row facing the street.

I was slowly moving along looking up at the names of the stores, when a car back up out of a space without looking at all. She didn't move slow and tentative like, she just jetted right out.

If I had hit the brakes, she would have run me over, luckily I hit the gas and just cleared her by inches.

Same day, a car pulled from a side street right in front of me, but I saw that one coming and was ready for it. Still annoys me when it happens though.

Earlier this week, going down the local 4 lane toward home I spied a large beast in the median. I slowed some from 60 just in case and when I got up to it, turns out to be a Great Dane in the median! Glad he decided to stay there cause that would have been a bad situation for sure.

What almost got you this week?

Two separate incidents today, about 30 minutes apart. The first one, I was in a group of 20 bikes riding towards Phoenix on the "Beeline Hwy", state route 87. We were climbing the last hill before the road levels off as you approach the eastern fringe of the Phoenix metro area, about 10 miles from Fountain Hills. We were in the right lane, and I was the third bike from the rear. In front of us was an SUV and behind it, a large 1 ton pickup pulling about a 30 foot horse trailer. The lead rider changed lanes to the left and we followed suit. When I was just coming up along the rear of the horse trailer, the driver towing the horse trailer decided he wanted to pass the SUV and just jumped over right in front of me. I was traveling faster than him and would have hit the back of the trailer if I wasn't paying attention and hit the brakes.

The second, about 30 minutes later, I was on the loop 202 freeway heading south to my home. This is a 4-lane freeway and I was in the third lane from the right. There was very little traffic on the road, just a Mercury Marquis to my right and my buddy on his 1500 Classic about 100 yards ahead. All of a sudden, the Marquis starts coming into my lane. I honked my horn and scooted over to the left to keep from being sideswiped. I looked over at the driver and it was some old woman, talking and looking at her passenger, instead of looking to see who or what was already in the lane she was moving into. Even the horn blast didn't get her attention.

I really need to get my Stebel mounted.

As I was comming up from california there were people comming down from searchlight turning left headed toward laughlin. I kind of expected the RV to turn left in front of me so I was ready and hit the brakes. I didn't expect the bike behind the RV (wich I couldn't even see) to also go for it. He started to and then stopped and swerved back which I'm glad he did because we probably would have hit (too close and no where to swerve) I still will never know why people turn left across traffic as the vehicle in front of them is still making the turn without making sure the road is clear.

Perhaps they lack the gray matter to make an informed decision.
Sorry, I know that's kind of mean, guess I'm just a little peopled out this week.

I see that same blind-left-turn-behind-a-bus stuff a lot. I definately give way until I can tell what's going on.

I've never been to Laughlin, but I've got a friend that's been talkin' it up to me for years. I always manage to beg off though. I guess I'm just really not the casino gambling breakfast buffet nightclub action kinda guy.

I told one of my buddies who has been to Laughlin I was thinking of going this year and he said "You ought to go once. And you'll never want to go again."

I've spent most of my career working with huge crowds of "sheeple". I like people on an individual level, but in a crowd...man...I've seen some amazing stupidity. I get to where I want to recreate with a select few rather than be a part of the crowd, yanno?
