I'm making some progress with my injuries. The "Road Rash" is healing well and some of the swelling in my hands and knees is going down now. My ribs are still painfull but the medication helps and I am finding a few more comfortable posistions to sleep in now. My breathing is coming along also and I am loosing weight too. All good things. Thanks again for your kind words and concerns it's good to be writing this. DJ

DJ,

The ribs take the longest. Keep progressing, remember the deep-breathing and pray to avoid coughing.

While you're healing, do you want to get this started?

1) What would you do NEXT time? (what did you learn that can help all of us?)

2) (I interpreted that you intentionally laid down the bike before hitting anything-- If not accurate, disregard this one) There are some here who say to NEVER lay the bike down. With your experience, what do you think?

This is not directed to you specifically. For those of us who regularly travel the big slabs in heavy traffic, you have provided a realistic topic for discussion. Please step in to correct the facts of the situation if we go astray.
I agree with you Bob about laying a bike down. At the time I layed the bike down . had already ran out of brakes and the condition of the road and left shoulder did not leave enough traction to avoid slamming in to the car . The car in front of me had slammed on their brakes and went left not giving me many options. But I do agree with you . Shift down, brakes, maneuver. Not necessarily in that order to avoid this . Of course keep adding space between you and the other vehicles as other cars take up your space. The decision to ride is another factor in avoiding an accident. Thank you Bob DJ

DJ

Just found this post and a belated get well wish for you. I went down in April and just started riding again. Kind of freaky first time back, especially at higher speeds. Really had to do some soul searching to decide if I wanted to ride again.

Best for a speedy recovery.. Don't rush it..

Joe

Sneezing not a fun thing for those ribs either. They say it helps to hold a pillow against your chest whenever you have to sneeze or cough.

Hey DJ, Glad to hear you are doing well after that experience. I have been out of the Kawanow loop for a while and just popped in to see what changed. Like BD said, us Californians are tough. I am sure you are looking for another bike for next spring. (Or month cause we Cali riders can motor year round) Get well now fellow central valley resident!

Ken
