Still, no better bike to go down on.

Had to lay mine down after hitting a deer. The impact had bent the forks and frame and I had no control so I put it down in a wheels first slide. The front and rear engine guards took the slide and kept me clear of the road. I would have been all right except the highway pegs were catching on the pavement and the bike was pinwheeling from a wheels first to a me first slide and it became prudent to say good bye and part company. I let go and stater rolling to get off the highway. The bike was totalled and I had a bruised elbow and now wear leather pants because I found that there are sensitive places that chaps don't cover. That complicated the ride back on the one bike we had left because it uncomfortable to sit down for a while.

Replaced it with another Nomad though. Those front and rear guards are something I really grew to appreciate.

Speedy recovery.

It's a good bike though and I'm on my third.

Very good to know you made it through and will recover. Broken ribs hurt, don't they. Don't cough, laugh, of sneeze and you'll do fine. Have a fast recovery, and keep us up on how it's going and what you're replacing the Nad with.

Good advice, and I'll add some advice to avoid the most serious danger of broken ribs; atelectasis leading to pneumonia. Shallow breathing over time will cause the lung parenchyma to "stick together" leading to atelectasis (incomplete expansion of lung) which could become infected (pneumonia). Make a point to take SLOW, DEEP breaths often. It will hurt like hell, but it's important to keep the lung tissue well aerated.

Glad to read you survived your ordeal and was willing to share with the rest of us. What advice would you share based on this harrowing experience?

MM Your absolutely right The Doctors and Nurses gave me the same instructions and this device to check my breathing. Their concerns with pneumonia were almost if not more than my other injuries. So I have to use this device ten times every hour that I am awake to check on my lung capacity. I had a rough night last night.Started with coughing and then a sneeze and the rest is just pain. I will get through this in time, with God's help and from my family and friends And then I can start looking for a new ride. Thanks DJ

Wrecking sux don't it DJ? I hate it for you and wish you a speedy recovery. Ease your mind about how it happened and be glad it didn't end any worse. I know a dozen scenarios race through your mind AFTER the fact.

I hit a deer last June and I was back on a Nomad about a month later. The only gear I had on was a leather vest and half helmet and fingerless gloves. All I got was a broken heal bone and road rash on the right arm. Now at night all I do is about 45 mph on the way home. :)

Your right (ISemt) things do go through your mind as to How and what could you have done differently.
1 ) I could have stayed home ! Not likely I was riding to a PGR welcome home to the Sac airport.
2 ) Left a lot earlier and taken a different route, perhaps.
3 ) I could have not laid the bike down and ate the car in front of me. The of course I would not be writing this now !
4) Don't second guess Why and How and What just be thankful to God that I'm alive to write about it at all.
* I know that we who ride have to be more Aware when we are riding, because the folks in the cages are not, and or don't care about anything else. They seem to be to busy with talking, texting and everything else except driving !

Life is about choices and you get to live with the ones you make. I'm Living with Mine!

I hate driving heavy traffic on the interstate because of situations like this. Extreme defensive driving is a must.

DJ, you are so lucky to have survived with 'just' a busted up body. Thank God that you are okay. Be well.

Heal quickly.

Glad things turned out as well as they did. Good thing you were wearing all the right protection.
