Went down last Saturday on The Nomad

I went down on the bike Saturday morning on I-5 just out of Stockton Ca. I was moving along at freeway speed (70 mph ) when traffic started to slow in a hurry I adjusted my speed and lane for more clearance Then the car in front of me about 3 car lengths ahead slammed on the brakes and I ran out of options because the lane to the right was blocked now and all that was left was the median so I went down on the road and shoulder. Thank God I was wearing
a full face helmet and leathers. The bike will more than likely be totaled. I just got released from the hospital today, three days in the ICU and two in a room. I ended
up with Five broken ribs ,a fracture on the left hand and wrist and some road rash and some internal bruising.Leathers and the helmet did their jobs, helmet scratched up and cracked. So DJ is down but not completely out. DJ

Ugh! Good thing you weren't more seriously injured. What kind of shape is the bike in?

Following a little too close, perhaps?

Those broken ribs are going to be tender for a long time. Take it easy and get better!

DJ,

I'm glad you're ok (relatively).

While you're healing, do you want to get this started?

1) What would you do NEXT time? (what did you learn that can help all of us?)

2) (I interpreted that you intentionally laid down the bike before hitting anything-- If not accurate, disregard this one) There are some here who say to NEVER lay the bike down. With your experience, what do you think?

This is not directed to you specifically. For those of us who regularly travel the big slabs in heavy traffic, you have provided a realistic topic for discussion. Please step in to correct the facts of the situation if we go astray.

DJ,

Sure am glad to hear that you survived this situation.

That's a good reminder of just how quickly things can go to hell in a hand basket.

Hope that you heal up quickly.

Ouch!

Glad to hear you are okay overall.

That is one reason why busy "slabs" scare me. I have a hard time dodging idiots in my car, let alone on a bike.

When you heal, what kind of bike will you be looking at?
