It takes a level of trust that only 3 of my most trusted rider friends have EARNED. Most of the MC officers that ride tandem have known each other for years, and know all of the rules. . . thus the trust. Don't even attempt to ride tandem with anyone who's next move you are not secure with and absolutely sure about. You have to KNOW that your co-rider is going to match your every move. Otherwise its too dangerous, don't even try it!!!! BTW one of those riders is a (female) Seattle MC officer.
It's not on my list of things to do. I don't even like group riding.
I'm OK with group rides, but prefer to ride sweep. That gives you the option to fall back without breaking the group. My best rides have always been solo. That way I get to pick the pace and there's not the attention necessary (half lane) for tandem. When I flew rockers, my top was "independent" and my bottom was "Nomad". Different definition, but "Go Figure". At the time it had more to do with young and stupid than the old "Code".

He said that he was "young and stupid" when he did it.

"Is the issue due to recaps or does it happen with original tires too? " Yes, for the most part, what you see on the road is 98% recaps. There are some Virgin casings that will pop like that, but most times it is a recap. recapers do not know anything on the history of that tire before it is capped. Unless he sees damage like a nail or something, and proceedes to cap the casing, it becomes a crap shoot. Add factors like load, heat, improper inflation, and you have a formula for disaster.

My dad drove truck for his entire working career, tried the factory thing for a week and quit. He drove for 30 years before he had his first accident of any kind when he had a car load of people run a stop sign and he hit them on a surface street (no one admitted to driving the car at the time). That being said, he told me once that if his rig had anything go bad, he got it off the road ASAP because it was a danger to him and anyone else around him.

I give trucks plenty of room and try to pass them ASAP. A tire gator coming off is my biggest concern along with being in a blind spot and them having to make an evasive maneuver.

It isn't. At the time I had close friends in more than one MC that didn't get along with each other. I had 3 clubs offer to prospect. "Independent" top rocker meant "No Club". "Nomad" meant no address. Wearing both of them meant not having "MC" or "1%" anywhere on my cut. Being young and stupid is self explanatory.

No, but I had a couple of "1 on 1's" with some associates (all in fun of course). to "show my worth" and continue to wear my "Independent" cut (in their club house). My "young and stupid" statement is still my only excuse.

I knew ahead of time not to win, but not to lose "by much". . . I did fine. :)

Did I mention "associates". I already had friends at those club houses (or I wouldn't have been there), they are not the ones I had to "prove" myself to.

That was in the 1970's. I've lost contact with most of "those" friends. I haven't had any part of that side of the culture in so long that I'm not even sure if the rules are the same. . . And I'm not looking to find out.

I will say that there are a few of "those" friends that I would still stand up for today if I had the opportunity. Guess that's a moot point though since I don't even know if they are still alive.
