My son met with the Minot State recruiter today and is seriously considering attending to play football. Anybody fill me in on this area? We will make a visit in January (dead of winter, lol) but he wants to know what it is like.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hey Ron. Make sure he understands that this is the PLAINS area. Flat and generally treeless. That region will generally get to -25 to -35 sometime during the winter and that is not windchill. It will blow up there as well.

The cold is not that bad, you can dress for it but that wind.

Make sure if he goes there he has a good jacket, maybe insulated coveralls, gloves and a stocking cap.

If he is taking a car up there for college, make sure that the cooling system has the appropriate level of coolant in it or you will freeze a block.

If you need more information, I know a guy who grew up around that area.

I went to the college's website and this is what I saw:

Bulletin for Campus: Campus Closure due to winter weather
Dec. 20, 2010

Due to the current weather conditions throughout the region, the campus of Minot State University will be closed as of 2 p.m - Dec. 20, 2010. The previously scheduled MSU Board of Regents/Boards holiday reception has been cancelled. Emergency operations personnel are expected to remain on campus.
--David Fuller, president of Minot State University

Just saying man... People die up there and they just wait till spring (which is July) to find them. They are mostly still frozen so it isn't a problem.

Way to make me feel good about sending my kid up there, lol. We are planning a visit in the heart of it all, in January.

Joel, I'll give you a call tomorrow. I had to cover a soccer game tonight and left my phone on the bike in the parking lot.

Yeah... sorry about that. But it IS really cold up there. The only place I truly thought I was going to die was in N.D. during a winter blizzard years ago -- and they have them all the time.

Being from Florida, we just thought you should prepare yourself.

No one up there is leaving their phones on their bikes this time of the year! ;)

I'm not sure anyone there has their bikes out now.

Back when I drove and 18 wheeler had a run to Inkster, ND with a heater not working. Had to drive with my blankets wrapped around my feet. Almost froze on that trip. It definitely is a cold state.

In the "heat" of warning you of the cold (pun intended); I forgot to say congratulations to your son for having a college looking at him.

Having two in college now; I know how anything to help on the expenses is a BIG deal. I hope something works out for your son.

You should be proud of his accomplishments in having a school look at him. Many don't have those opportunities ;)

Ok, I'll chime in. I live 80 miles west of Minot, and I graduated from Minot State in 2006. Coach, if you want a great school that gives a top notch education, you won't be disappointed. It's a small enough school where the professors know the students by name, but big enough (3,000 students) where a wide variety of degrees are offered. The football team has really done well the past couple of years. Coach Rudolph is a great coach who demands respect from his players and treats them right. I don't think you'd regret sending your son to play for him.
On to the weather: yes, it's cold here now, but please don't stereotype us because of that. Several of the posts you've received are deceptive. It's not constantly below zero here, and we don't have blizzards all the time. Yes, it's cold now (15 degrees as I type this) but it's not brutal (to us). Understandably, if you're not used to this climate, that's extremely cold, but we're used to it. If you prepare for it, you'll do just fine. I'm sure it would take some getting used to being from Florida, but people adapt. The coldest months are December through February. Come summer, it's 90 degrees outside and life is good. The cold just makes you appreciate spring and summer that much more!
Above all, if you want a safe place to send your son, I don't think you could do much better. It's a great state with great people. I'm proud to call it home.

PC

ps: Don't believe everything in the movie, "Fargo." We don't talk like that. Well, maybe a little :)

I guess if you believe that, I've got some great ocean-front property in Arizona that I'd love to sell you!
