Ape hangers, damn that Pablo

After seeing Pablo's ape hangers, I developed a major desire for a customizing job. So I started looking on Ebay and found 1" apes for about $65 for 14" and $75 for 16". After searching and finding a previous post about this, I saw that 1.25" had been used, but those are over $200. My question is, are 1" sufficient or do I have to use 1.25"?

Can't answer the size question, but on the + side, Pablo does credit them for probably helping him stay on the bike after his recent deer strike. Still, don't think I could go there.

Well your stock bars are 1". You can go to whatever you want as long as the area where your whitch housings bolt on are 1". Unless you are going to go full custom on those too. then it is a matter of changing everything according to what size bar you buy. Just remember the tuning fork effect. The longer the piece of metal the more the vibration will resonate through them. you may want to seriously consider a bar snake especially if you go 16". It is a great look.

If you go with 1.25, you will have to change the risers to hold the larger bar.

I've been researching adding apes too and with most of the good 1.25" bars, they taper down at the grips and at the center so that you still use all the stock parts. I'm leaning toward Wild 1 bars or even Baron's Kong Bar.

Risers, switch housings, anything clamped to the bars, really.

I got my 18" x 1 1/4" apes (DCS-18APE) at Mean Cycles for $159.95. These are not quite as tall as the 16" apes with 2 1/2" risers I had previously, but they feel much more solid and look better. They taper in at the bar ends and at the clamps to 1", so you can use your present hardware. You need to get +6" throttle cables, brake and clutch lines, and solder in 6" wire extenders (pain in the ass). End result - the most comfortable riding position I've experienced. If I had the money, I'd have had a professional do the work, but it all came out ok even with my limited mechanical skills. Good luck if you decide to do it.

Do the bars (especially at the grips) vibrate any more or less with the apes? I find that mine vibrate alot and it is extremely noticeable when I hit a bump.

I haven't noticed any vibration. The Nomad is a very smooth running bike. If you ever stop next to someone on a Harley, look at all the stuff shaking and vibrating. I don't know how they sit on those things for very long. About the only vibration I notice is when I rest my leg against the air filter cover on the left side of the engine. It vibrates a little with the engine.

Nice LOOK, but i couldnt do the arms in the air letting the blood drain out sort of thing.

Doc,
My hands are about shoulder level, but I have not had any problem with circulation or my arms feeling tired. I ride from Huntsville to San Antonio and back fairly often (about 225 miles each way) and haven't had any problems. When my hand position was lower, my "bad" shoulder would get cramped up and start bothering me, but it doesn't hurt at all with the apes. I find the position very comfortable.
