Looks like the driver of the BMW that violated his right-of-way will be charged with manslaughter...

Scottsdale woman could face manslaughter in fatal motorcycle crash

by Brennan Smith - Nov. 29, 2010 10:44 AM
The Arizona Republic

A driver involved in the death of a motorcyclist Sunday night in Scottsdale is expected to be charged with manslaughter.

About 5:30 p.m., Sharolyn Medina, 45, of Scottsdale was turning left from eastbound Shea Boulevard to northbound 124th Street when the motorcyclist, Eric Ziemba, 24, of Scottsdale, struck her BMW as he traveled west, police said.

Ziemba, who was not wearing a helmet, was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Scottsdale police spokesman David Pubins said.

Police said alcohol appears to have been a factor in the crash and that Medina reportedly was driving under the influence.

Shea Boulevard was partially closed between 120th and 130th streets until midnight, Pubins said.

Not good news...

I know a Ziemba in Chicago. Wonder if he knows the kid or not. It's not a common name... might be a connection.

I wonder what type of bike it was. Any idea CJ?

Just asking... that's all.

They did a story on the 10:00 news last night and it showed the bike all mangled on the road, it was a blue sport bike, couldn't tell what kind.

--CORRECTION--

I just read it was a Harley Davidson, not a sport bike. Couldn't really tell from what I saw on TV.

It's a shame that we routinely have to drive and ride in fear of drunks. You never know the condition of the driver in the oncoming or left turning vehicle. I always assume that they can't see me or that they will do exactly what they aren't supposed to. It's the only way to survive and still there are no guarantees. The judge needs to hit her hard with jail time. Only bad thing is if she has kids they will suffer more than she will.

Just the other morning some drunk woman was driving the wrong direction on the freeway and caused several accidents before she went into the ditch. This was at around 09:00 AM.

Always hate to read of these accidents happening. I am always worried about the car I am meeting fearing it will turn left in front of me. Or some idiot will be on a side street and see you coming and go ahead and pull out in front of you. Of course you have to watch your mirrors for fear of some jerk being distracted and not see you stopped in front of them. There are so many things we have to watch out for. And what I have listed is only a partial list.

I don't mind riding at night, just not late at night. When the bars close up I don't want to be on the road.

I've got news for you BD, there are drunks on the road 24/7.

Yeah... 9AM is pretty early in the morning to be drunk... but it happens...

Around here some of the factories have 3-shifts... so the third-shifters start drinking when the sun comes up... that puts them "drunk" on the road before noon.

You just never know...

Try Las Vegas. DUI is a 24/7 thing.

Ok OK............If I must.....

Yes fellas,,,,, people do drink 24/7 that bit of information didn't escape me

I'm using probabilities and statistics that drunk people at night have far less visual acuity than in the daytime. Non drunks have less visual acuity at night as well.

Stack both of the odds against you and riding at night is far more dangerous.

Watch yourself out there..

BD is correct. Drinking at night does reduce your night vision more than it does without the alchohol in your system.
In this accident, I hope they do charge her hard because of the alchohol involved. Unfortunately, a large portion of riders involved in crashes have been tipping the jug also. Even worse. IMHO
