A small problem

Last time I had done some work on my bike I had removerd the exaust and didn't have new crush washes, well I got some and was changing them out ( thought it was leaking some) Well the problem I have is I can't get the V & H's bolted up all the way. No problem at the motor, but the very back one on each side. I can get 2 or 3 turns on thread and then it starts to spin. Now I can't get the bolts out or tighten. Anyone got any idea? I've tried everything in my tool box, just can't get a grip on it. Here is a drawing of what I'm talking about.

That part that spins, is it smooth or does it have flats on it? You could try wedging a screwdriver or something between it and the side to get it out. If it has flats, you could probably tighten it up, but then you'll have problems the next time you have to take it off.

It sounds like you cross-threaded the bolts and broke the welded nuts free. If you can back the bolts out the nuts should be able to be shoved out and you can put sone clean nuts in there and clean bolts.

HOWEVER: The V&H nuts & bolts are American threads (SAE threads actually) while the original bolts are metric. Are you sure you didn't try to use the metric bolts in the american threads?

I'm sure I used the same one that came out of them. And no didn't cross thread at least I don't think I did. I may have to get someone to spot weld them to get them out.

Can you reach up in there with a pair of small long nose visegrips to clamp on the nut?
