BTW.....were you at home working when you did all this? ??? ??? ???
Uh...what's your point? ::)
I just thought that with that kind of effort you put in, that you really should be getting paid. ;)

Okay, I was on a conference call while I worked on the cruise control.

Nothing like getting paid while you work on motorcycle stuff.

Mac, yep I got it in reverse alright. I just noticed that as I was reading back through the thread. Must have had a brain fart. Thanks for letting me know.

CJ,

Excellent write-up. When something goes bad, my tendency is to think worst case. Here, I would have immediately jumped to the conclusion that it was a circuit board problem--and, therefore, nothing that I could fix.

Even with experience, I'm amazed how many problems are easily correctable: clean & lube, tighten the connection, check the battery.

One of my life changing books was "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance." A severe paraphrase: "The bike (or anything) is telling you its symptoms. Understand what it is telling you before deciding what is wrong."

Cj always has good write ups and fixes. This time he just added pics. I think his record of on line fixes beats mine here. Lots of guys here are right dead on the money with fix info at this site. MAS is, Ring is, Yellow Jacket is,Tros is, and i know i am missing a whole bunch of other guys so don't be pissed if i didn't mention your name. I am doing this list from mammory

Great write-up, CJ! I'm going to have to tear into my unit and do the same thing. Hopefully sometime this winter I can get some time to work on mine and getting it working properly.

UPDATE

I have good news and I have great news!

First, the good news - I connected up the cruise control module I overhauled the other day, and it appears to work. I didn't go to all the trouble of lifting the tank, routing the cable and connecting it to the throttle, but I plugged it in, connected the vacuum hose, and while applying throttle, I can push the set button and see the cable retract.

At first, it didn't work and if you recall from my original post, I said I couldn't test the brake light circuit the other day with the LED while troubleshooting the unit currently on the bike because I didn't have a helper. Well I wish I had because that leads me to the great news...

My brake light was burned out. I was checking the brake circuit with the LED and applying the brake would make the LED flash. It's not supposed to do that, so I looked to see if my brake light was stuck ON and found it wasn't working at all.

So I replaced the 1157 lamp and reconnected the unit currently in the bike, and it works again. Then I disconnected that unit and connected the one I fixed the other day, and it started working.

So I once again have a working cruise control unit, and a working spare. It really bothers me that I was riding around for a few days without a working brake light.

Hoo hoo! Life is good!

Good job CJ, and great presentation.

I only wish I could work on bikes like you can, and wish even more that I could work on my bike while I am at work!!! ;)

Way to go Scott. Sometimes fixing things just takes the courage to open them up.

Great news Scott!! Glad you got them fixed.

I'm still contemplating a home in AZ. for retirement.... ::)
Maybe one day in the not too distant future you can help me fix my bike. .....buddy, ol'pal, good friend,.... who I've only met once!!!. ;)

Really though, good news on the "fix it job"

I have a mirror, a couple in fact. However, in order to see the LED through the little hole I drilled in the cover, I have to be way down low and there's no way to reach either brake lever.

As usual I don't understand. :-[
Was the cruise control not working because your brake light was out and you took the thing apart unnecessarily ???
