Thoughts on pinging

Yesterday it was 101 degrees and I could not get my Nomad to ping! What the heck is up with that? All's I've done is the Seafoam treatment and increased my TFI pot 1 from 2:30 to 3:00 adding fuel under 2500 RPM. Yet my mileage is up!

Either it's a miracle (call the Pope) or that Seafoam really works.

What is the procedure for checking and/or adjusting the TFI circuit? I couldn't find it on Gadget's page.

It has 4 "pots" that are dials. #1 adjust the slow speed small throttle openings. #2 is the accelerator pump pot #3 is the wide open pot and #4 is when #3 kicks in. Turning all of them clockwise enrichens each segment.

I appreciate the reply, BD - but it's a little simplistic. Where are these pots found, and how do I know if I need to adjust them and/or how much to adjust them? How do I take the voltage readings?

There are found on the TFI unit itself. Providing you purchased one. Its an aftermarket fuel enhancer that plugs into your injetors to (add only) more fuel depending on what your needs are. The 4 small pot (dials) are on the unit itself that is usually mounted behind the left side cover. No computer programs, no downloads. Just start playing with what most people recommend as a starting point and go from there.

Okay, my bad. No, I don't have one of those. I thought there was some adjustment that is measured with a multimeter. Was it for the TPS, then?

TPS is throttle position sensor. TFI is Techlusion Fuel Inhancer or Inrichment whatever device. Tps is located on the Nomad under the tank behind the injectors near the thermostat housing. It is adjustable. I've done mine. Bumped it up just enough to stop that "mystery" stall at slow speeds some get. usually some just turn the idle up to about 1000rpm. Mine idles perfectly at 800 with the tps moved from 4.40 to 4.43. Has never stalled since the day I did it. Richens it up on the slow end of throttle openings.

Yesterday, I noticed that when I was shifting from 1st to 2nd, after I let off the throttle and shifted, when I went to roll the throttle back on, the engine sort of "gasped", like it almost died, but then it revved back up again. This happened maybe 3-4 times. Is this the condition you are describing? I think it also may have done it just as I was starting to goose the throttle after idling at a traffic light.

My bike was running like 800 pounds of crap last night. I think I may have gotten some lousy gas. I put 4 oz of Seafoam in it when I got it back home, and it seems better today..

Sooo! I drilled the holes on the bottom of the filter cover plastic housing, changed to a colder plug, ran some seafoam for a couple of tanks, and decided to take the bike for a test run to palmdale. the bike ran beautiful all morning, no pinging whatsoever, going up to wrightwood from palmdale, it was around 95 F, still no pinging on WOT. or even light throttle, rode up to Big Bear, no pinging hwever!!! once i got down to redlands via hwy 38, that's where i verified that the pinging is caused mostly by the very hot air that comes in to the breather element. the problem lies on the hot air coming in, due to the fact that the radiator blows hotter and hotter air around the sides of the engine. the answer to pinging mus be to add a cold air intake somehow, above and ahead of the radiator, to collect cold air from the front of the engine, what draws me to this conclussion, is the fact that my bike NEVER pings in the morning, when the air is colder, only wnem it gets really hot around the engine. i am going to form a special intake to draw cold air from the front of the engine and see what happens.

my two cents.

resistor mod..... I went all the way up to 2K resistor. Yes I can still find situations that can make it ping (I'm running 89) but its sooooo much better now that I can live with it. I used to get ping running premium in 1st gear in the summertime!!! It was awful.

Yep. I agree. I go ride in the mountains, where it's cooler and she purrs like a kitten. Back into the valley and the heat and it starts rattling again. I thought maybe it might be altitude related, but I'm thinking it's more temperature related. I bought my Nomad on September 30 last year, so it wasn't as hot at that point.

Mine has started pinging in 5th gear a little when accelerating uphill, now that we are up to the mid to high 90s every afternoon. Increasing pot 2 on my Fi2000 actually made it worse, so I put it back. I went up to 89 octane gas and this has helped. I bought a 1.5 K resistor today and will probably put this in sometime this week.
