Car tire on motorcycles - an opinion

Hey Ron,

Check out this thread on the Holligan Cruisers site. It talks about a car tire on a 1500 Nomad.

Car tire on motorcycles - an opinion

From what I read when I was researching mine that the 1500 has a narrow rim compared to the 1600, and that was where the concern was, getting the CT on the rim, getting it to seat properly, and also clearance issues with the swing arm / drive shaft.

I can't find the spec on the 1500 rim, but the 1600 has a 5" rim and the common 195 tires recommend a 5.5" rim as the minimum. If you mount the 195 on a narrower rim, it may pinch it in more than it should. Goose likely has a similar condition with the 205 (usually spec'd for a 6-6.5" rim) and he has been going strong on that tire AFAIK, so it should be fine. Just make sure you do the research before jumping in. :)

They have a 2001 1500 Classic...same tire size for rear as mine. Guess I can use that one?

You guys are too quick or I read too slow, lol. I have been reading up on sizes. I'm reading 195/60-16 as the size that would fit. Goose, I am going to check with a friend here, I think he has all the stuff to do the work or has a friend that has done it. If not, I will take you up on the deal. I'll tell Tammy it is a new necklace for our trip...lol. Think she'll buy that?

The rim width on a 1500 is 3.5", kind of narrow compared to the 1600's but guys still manage to get them installed.

That was one of the reasons I bought a 185/75/16. My Nomad has a wider rim than a 1500 and I could have gone to a 195 but the 185 looks like it was made for my rim!

Coach, Guess we'll know what happened if Tammy starts a new fashion statement huh? I think I'll get Debby a set of 20's so I can use them on my truck after the trend goes away! (HE HE)

Car tire on motorcycles - an opinion

Well, after doing some research on the old girl (no not my wife, the '99) seems that I would have to do some mods to the swing arm which I am not comfortable with doing. I haven't found a stock tire size that anyone has used that allows just a mount and ride deal.

Now I'm stuck with finding the best quality tire for the bike that will give me good mileage wear. I'm thinking of either going with Dunlop E3's or Cobras. I don't know. I'm kind of disappointed because I really was liking the idea of a CT on the bike.

Coach, don't know about any mods, but a friend of mine has a yamahopper and it had a 150/90-15 MC tire on it, and we installed a 165/80-15 CT on it with no problems, of course I don't know if a 16" is available in that size or not, but in my opinion I wouldn't think you would have any mods to do as long as you didn't put any thing wider than 185 on it?

I found on a GW board, something about a Dunlop 175/60-16 and am searching for it online. Also thinking about 185/55-16.

Car tire on motorcycles - an opinion

I wonder if the tire BD has on his would work on mine? The aspect ratio is smaller (75 vs. 80) but the tread width is larger (175 vs. 150), size seems like it may work. The overall width would be a tick under 1" wider than the stock, and diameter is a tick under 1" larger. With putting it on a smaller rim, that should make it a little narrower. Does that make sense? I read somewhere that you could go 15-25 over on width without any problems.

Thoughts?

BD, where did you find it?

I only read the funny stuff you write or something that pertains to me, lol. I promise I will go back and find all of your missives on the tire.

tirerack.com has a Continental Vanco in 185/75-16. That's the size BD has. It has a section width of 7.2" when on a 5" rim. When pulled down onto a 3.5" rim the width should be less.
The diameter is 26.9" which I think is about 1.5" bigger than a 150/80-16. Check your clearances around the outside of the tire. This would add about .75" to the radius of your original tire. My guess is that there should be plenty of clearance to accept this larger diameter tire.

Bob, I actually found a 175/75-60. I did the computations on this web site for comparison purposes on size:
