The haynes manual's wire diagram and the Kawa service manual's wire diagram are the exact same. I have an electronic service manual for 1500 and just checked.

I must have missed that. Yes, if he applied power directly to the pump and nothing happened, it would be DOA.

i did. Positive terminal to yellow wire coming off pump, negative terminal to black/yellow coming off pump. Resulted in nothing, so I ordered a pump, but wanted to ask you all if there was anything else it could be.

When the pump comes in and I install it, is there anything extra I'll have to do? What I'm trying to ask is...is the fuel system pressurized, causing me to do somethign other than just install the new one? if so, what will I need to do?

i went ahead and did that last night. After i install the new one, I wasn't sure if the system needed to be pressurized before it would work correctly or not. Sounds like I just connect the new fuel pump and reconnect everything and see if it starts. When the pump comes in, i'll hook it up directly to the battery to make sure it works before installing it

I know this may be a little late but some of the early carbed 1500's will run without a fuel pump. (They will run better with one) The pump must be external to the tank. By pass the pump and see if it will run on gravity fed fuel.

A good friend suggested that I do the same to get home and I thought he had lost his marbles. Good to know he hasn't. I'm not sure how to hook up the fuel lines without the pump, but I can wait until this friday when my pump arrives. The 'honey-do' list is enormous to get ready to travel tomorrow, so won't have time to tinker with the bike tonight

All you have to do is run a line from the fuel filter to the carb. Might want to try it that way you will know for future reference. Tank petcock to the fuel filter then to the Carb.

Hey did you get this thing running? Did you try it without the pump?

Thanks for checking on me DC. I'm hanging with my family in Bama until Sunday. My pump was scheduled to arrive today then got postponed until Tuesday. I will try the pump (connect to battery) before installing

BACK ON 2 WHEELS!!! Looks like the fuel pump was the issue. I cleaned and checked every hose and wire as well, including thoroughly cleaning the petcock. A little ether to get it started, and a test drive later looks like she's working great again. Thanks everyone for the help

Yep, that's exactly what I thought it was. I'm so glad I wasn't one of those people insisting "Dude, it's you battery, it's your battery". Boy would that have felt embarassing. Good job!!!!

Yeah Right! You were definitely feeling the peer pressure and just wanted to be a part of the "it's the battery" crowd. you're just backtracking now!!!

It's all good. I would've had to buy a new battery soon enough anyway (or that's what I'm telling myself), so no biggie. I actually made out pretty good, except the bike being down for over a week. I was able to buy the fuel pump, fuel filter, and hoses used (ebay) for $67 shipped. It's from a 1997 VN1500 with 10,500 miles on it. It didn't show that it fit my bike, but all the aspects of the filter, hoses, pump, wiring harness, wire colors, bracket, etc. matched mine perfectly, so I took a chance that ended up working out (hopefully for a long while). The battery was $105. A friend towed the bike from my work to my house and I gave him $40. I did the work, so $0 in mechanical costs. Total invested = new battery for less than the cost of a new pump ($200), so I'm not complaining. A buddy towed the bike from work to my house (i gave him $40). Since I did all of the work myself, total invested is $212. Since a new pump (without hoses or filter) is $200, I'm definitely not complaining. If I wasn't crunched for time, however, I would have rather bought a better battery (16 or 20, not 14), but it's new and it works.
