Heat and dealer comment..

If I remember it goes 160 degrees at the 1/4 mark 180 degrees at the 1/2 mark and 200 degrees at the 3/4 mark. I saw this on another forum is where I got this from, I believe it is correct because the fan comes on at 203 degrees which my gauge is barely off the 3/4 mark.

I believe the 1700's use the same Techlusion (Dobeck)TFI as the 1600's, same part number.

I just picked up my 2011 Vaquero Saturday. I will take it to the dealer this Saturday for the 600-mile service. It has been in the low to mid-90s every day, and I get stuck in Nashville rush-hour traffic every afternoon. Why do they call it rush-hour, when we can't go? Anyway, this forum gave me a heads-up about the heat. Yes, it gets hot sitting in traffic (about 3/4 mark), but not unbearable, and I ride with a full jacket and full helmet. As soon as I start moving at any decent speed, it rapidly drops down to half or slightly below. I don't find it unreasonable, but I will wrap the pipes later, looks like a reasonable project! In short, I'm thrilled with my new ride!

I just wrapped the ones on the voyager, took 25 feet of 2 inch wrap and that included the pipe that goes under the engine to the left muffler. About 30 minutes, the hardest part was put the heat shields back on. I would advise using stainless steel hose clamps vice the metal ties they supply with the accell kit I got.

You'll love the Vaquero, mine has been great! To wrap the pipes remove the header, you can't do a decent job otherwise. It took 50' of 2" black DEI wrap to wrap the header using the proper 1" overlap and stainless steel cable ties. It will make a difference...

Here's a pic right before I put the heat shields back on, the stock clamps will fit perfectly even using the 1" overlap wrap...

Or, some people like the wrap look. You could leave the heat shields off and show off the heat wrap. I guess putting the shields back on would help with the heat issue even more, though.

When you disable them the heat goes down.

The temp gauge only indicates coolant temp, right? So it's only indicating heat from cylinder heads which is disapated via the radiator. The other 2 heat sources, cylinder coooling fins and radiant heat from exhaust, are not indicated just felt.

I like Darkstar's idea of wrapping the pipes to restrict radiated heat and have ordered the tape from Thermal-Tec to do mine. There are theoretical performance benefits of keeping that heat in the exhaust too, so I consider it a high value mod.

I don't care for the wrapped look myself, if the heat shields hide it, then that would be a good alternative.

Heat shields do hide it. You would have to know where to look to see that it has been wrapped. Helped greatly for my wife's complaining about heat on her right ankle before the wrapping, she says it's fine now. Never really noticed the heat myself, as far as cooking me, even before wrapping my pipes

puckoach, If you bought the 06 you have with the V&H baggers on it, it was cooler than stock. Just sayin'

I have never ridden any of the 17's yet.... I don't plan to see a dealer anytime soon either.

I think he means the reed valves and blown air into the head pipes to cook off fumes. That set up did make head pipes hotter, and so does the goat belly.

If that isn't the idea he means then i don't know myself.

The picture in the original post 40 of this quoted one shows a narrow seat that could have scoops or air deflectors to subdue heat..... HD uses these on some of their bikes.

In the picture it looks like inner thighs come close to the rear head pipe and the cly head.

Where is the goat belly on a 17?
