I bought the Nuvi 550 because I just wanted GPS. I don't use Bluetooth, and I didn't want a $700 MP3 player.

I made a mistake, after reading about so many I confused the two. I was thinking a thousand dollar unit for $210 would have been a great buy! hahaha...

No, the Zumi 550 is specifically made for motorcycles. What I bought is the Nuvi 550. Amazon has lit listed for $245. (I bought mine last year) I just kept watching ebay and found 1 for $210.

I use a tom tom in a ram mount. It has worked great for 1000's of km. It is not waterproof but I don't cover it in light rain with no problems. In heavier rain I just cover it with a baggie and can still see it.

I found out that even the waterproof GPS units are not always waterproof. While I was out hunting last week I fell in a creek I was trying to cross, my waterproof Magellan GPS didn't like the water and quit on me. This caused me to not be able to find my way back, and I had to spend a night outside in the bush.
Its been drying out here at home for over a week, and just started to work again last night, however I lost all the coordinates that I had saved in the unit and it had to be initialized just like a brand new unit. I think I'll give Magellan a phone call tomorrow, since I don't think I'll ever be able to trust the unit again.

Well, the unit got a test. I wonder if water proof is tested to mil spec. I have a Casio Boulder phone and I've thrown in a pool at 5' and it worked fine afterwards. I know someone that dropped his in a river and it worked for two days until the battery went dead. He says so because he could call it and it rang. I doubt the GPSs would hold up to that.

The Zumo 660 is said to be waterproof up to 1 meter deep. I'm not going to test it though. I'll take their word for it.

I think you're going to have to get a marine GPS for it to be totally waterproof. Let's just say that the 550 and 650 are waterproof from rain and such.

The term waterproof doesn't mean much more than water resistant anymore. "a night in the bush"? Like to hear more about that. Did it lead to a search?

Its says its waterproof, but I know that doesn't say a lot anymore. I broke through some thin ice while crossing the creek and went in up to my armpits. I got out in a hurry but it was probably about fifteen or twenty seconds until I got myself out.
Its hard to swim in winter clothes while wearing a backpack and carrying a rifle. I didn't want to lose anything so it took an extra few seconds to get out. I made a fire a spent the night, following morning I walked out and met up with my pals around 10am. They where going to give me until 12.00 before they called in search and rescue.I knew I was going to be ok for the night, but I was worried about those guys looking for me after dark.
