They figured it was cheaper than paying all of the booth attendants.
Plus, by eliminating the tool booth operators, they actually charge you more for the license plate tolls. I have an account, so just blaze on through and they email me a statement once a month and hit my credit card for $35 whenever the account balance reaches zero. If you don't have an account, they shoot a picture of your license plate and mail you a bill, but the toll is also 10% higher. Believe me, they've done their homework and won't be giving away any "free" postage!
What really irritates me is that when the built E-470, which is basically a bypass around Denver on the east side, they were going to charge tolls for 20 years and then it would be paid for and become toll free, like C-470 on the west side of Denver. But...as usual...someone figured that this was a pretty substantial source of revenue, so it will always be a toll road now. Same old story.

You certainly have not been on Illinois tollways!!!

When they honk around here... they're after you down the road!
I guess they would need to have their manners checked on the side of the road.

Yeah... not a pleasant group of people sometimes... especially in the heat of rush-hour.

Warning, Warning, Idiot at the toll booth. Let's run him over. Yeah, that's the neighborly thing to do.
Greg, I can actually hear them from here.

In KS, you take a ticket when you get on and then pay a fee when you get off - based on how long you were on the turnpike.
The ones we have been on in OK tend to be more of a fixed amount at every toll booth - no ticket to lose. However, when we were on I-44 we got on at one point and they told us we could use the receipt at the next booth to get a refund of part of what we just paid. That seemed like a pretty stupid system to me, but I'd guess that most people don't bother getting the refund, so it is extra revenue.
The only advice is just to pay attention to the sign and have a pretty good idea of whether or not you have enough change for the unattended booth.

OK, I didn't read this whole thread but why not just plan your trip to not go on any toll roads. ???

Now there is a plan TC.
We used to have toll booths around here but they have all been taken down after the hwy was paid for.
Having said that, We got caught on one by accident during rush hour and not ready for the toll booth while traveling on bikes in Nova Scotia. Luckily my sister in law was a passenger on the bike ahead and had access to her change and time toget it ready as we moved along. By going through the attendant assisted lane, she was able to pay for both bikes.
So from that I learned to carry lots of change that I can get at and if possible even with the correct change head for the attendant assisted lane to pay. The flow is at a bit slower pace with people getting the correct change and gives you the few extra seconds needed when passing through on a bike.

I know it works in PA. NY. NJ and I think in Del. Its alot better then not having to put you foot down in all the oil.

Because the toll roads are the most direct/quickest route. I have just never had to deal with them before and was curious about the procedure.

Yep. I also know hoe toll roads operate in Kansas, Illinois, Ontario, and the East Coast. Very educational.
