How'd y'all dig this old thread up?

When they do have it at the Dollar General labeled "DG Gas Stuff" "Compare With Seafoam" I'll add some to Todds gas and let y'all know how it dose.

I was told by a mechanic NOT to run Seafoam all the time.

His logic seemed sound. The active ingredients in Seafoam are chemical stripping agents which get rid of carbon, varnish, etc but are also caustic to some rubber components. It offers very little in the way of lubrication but does have an octane boost effect and definitely reduces pinging. With that said, I just love the stuff and use it in my motorcycles, trucks, lawn equipment and even our fire trucks.

What he did suggest was to run Seafoam through about once a quarter and use Marvel Mystery Oil (MMO) in between. MMO wont damage rubber components. It has a lesser cleaning effect but much higher lubricating effect. It does also seem to increase the temps at which I notice pinging but frankly I don't really have much of an issue with this.

My 2 cents worth.

PS: nothing replaces a good throttle body cleaning. Its like magic.

A lot of the threads should die, but they don't.

How much Seafoam exactly?

How long is your season and how many kms do you usually put on in that time? As well, exactly how much Seafoam are you putting in during this season? So far I only put in a bit if my bike has been sitting for 2 weeks and then considerably more for winter storage.

I usually get about 8 months of riding in and average about 12,000km a season. I'll add about 1 or 2 ounces per gallon to the tank3-4 times a season.
I also add about 4-5 ounces to the oil in the springtime and ride the bike close to a week before I change the oil. I find it helps keep the innards nice and clean.

Who told you guys Seafoam has any "octane boosting" benefits? It doesn't. In fact, if you do some digging you'll find it actually hinders performance while it is running through the engine. It's a cleaner, that's it. Read the ingredients.

You would be much, much better off running 100% pure toluene purchased from a paint supply store. That is a true octane booster and is totally safe to run in a motorcycle. I use to run it mixed 50% with premium fuel in a drag race VW GTI on boost. Worked great. Same stuff gasoline is made of but without all of the extra garbage like cleaners. If you mix it in the right ratios you could easily get above 100 octane using normal premium fuel as the base fluid.

The reason I ask is for me it seems to help Pinging ALOT.
If I do not add it frequently the pinging increases.
I know my next step will be to get a Fuel Processor once my budget gets better.
Thanks
Try using a higher Octane gas. I use 91 octane every other fill up and have no ping, I never put anything under 89

Thanks Ringadingh. I'm going to try that. Cheers

I use that Lucas Oil stuff in the tall skinny plastic bottle 3 or 4 times a year. CA only has 91 octane and it took a Dobeck unit to really cure the ping.
