I'm almost ready for a new tire on the back of my 2008 Nomad and want to give the Avon Cobra a try based on the many positive reports posted on this forum. It looks like most are running the 180/70R16 so I would assume no clearance issues with a slightly wider tire than stock (170/70X16).

Has anyone tried to fit the wider 200/60R16 Cobra tire on the Nomad and will it fit without problems?

Secondly, because the Cobra is a radial tire and the existing Excedra on the front is bias construction can you mix them? I know that they say that you can't mix radials and bias ply tires on a car , but what about a bike? The front Excedra's got lots of tread left and really don't want to replace it yet if I don't need to.

I'm pretty sure a 200 tire will fit, I have a 205 CT on the rear and although close (.090" clearance) it doesn't rub. Mathematically, a 200 tire would have just over 3/16" (.188") of clearance, and (mathematically), the 170 tire has just over 5/8" clearance (.688")
On mixing radials & bias tires....... rule of thumb is......
Radial front and rear is OK
Bias front and rear is OK
Radial rear & Bias front is OK
Bias rear and Radial front is NOT OK.

I will say I have had about every tire that will fit a 1500, but the Pirelli and of the bunch I will not be buying a Bridgestone or Avon. We all know the problem with the Bridgestones. The Avon bias tires I have now will likely not wear out before the cracking becomes so severe that I have to replace them. The front tire has just under 9,000 miles and has been on about eight months and it is checked/cracked fairly severe. The environment here is too hot and dry for the Avons.

Thanks for the info Guys!

I will likely just stick with a 180 Avon Cobra radial on the back (a 200 might be overkill) and keep the Excedra on the front until it's ready for replacement in about another year. Then I'll switch that over to a Cobra as well, assuming I'm happy with the one on the back.

Have a Avon Cobra 180-70-16 with 12,000 miles on it. It looked good until the last 500 miles. Now it has some wear marks on it looks like something was rubbing on it but can not find anything. thought wear bar marks went across the tire. any way here is a Pic of it. how many miles do these tires get? the BS tire that came with bike got 6,500 miles when I, had this one put on. run 40psi in it.in the pic it looks like a bluge but is is flat across the tire must be the lighting that makes it look that way.http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z362/rhret2/007.jpg

It will take about 40k to wear this tire like yours RAY2.
Plus this CR tire out performs that avon in every aspect. even in the twistys.

The warranty does not cover oem tires, and I sure hope you ride enough to wear that oem junk off, and need a new tire before warrenty runs out.

Nothing improves a Nomad better than a set of real tires.

I would narrow that down to the 180/70-16. It will give you better speedometer accuracy. My 180/60 Avon and Dunlop Elite 3 tires are about 10mph high at 55 mph. I have the 180/60 Elite 3 now because that was the one tire that was in Key West that would fit my flat-tired bike without waiting 4 days. The speedometer acccuracy is really the only downside to the lower profile tire - so given a choice the 180/70 is a touch better and there are quite a few good ones to choose from.
A picture of my 180/70 Avon Cobra with 12,000 miles on it (it had more tread left but less air holding capacity than Ray2's tire):

A smarter person would replace his tires a bit sooner than I seem to, maybe I'll learn. :) The Yamaha dealer in Key West had a closseout price on an Avon Venom that had very cracked sidewalls and doubtless a long ago manufacture.
