Philly Cheesesteaks and scrapple!

I can't get a decent Cheesesteak out here in California. I grew up in Maryland about 50 minutes south of Philly. Whenever I visit back east I eat scrapple every morning and a cheesesteak at least every other day.

Scrapple is typically made of hog offal, such as the head, heart, liver, and other scraps, which are boiled with any bones attached (often the entire head), to make a broth. Once cooked, bones and fat are discarded, the meat is reserved, and (dry) cornmeal is boiled in the broth to make a mush. The meat, finely minced, is returned, and seasonings, typically sage, thyme, savory, and others are added. The mush is cast into loaves and allowed to cool thoroughly until gelled. The proportions and seasoning are very much a matter of the region and the cook's taste.

Sounds delicious Not

TC you're absolutely correct! When we moved from the farm into town my Dad still butchered a hog yearly right on the gravel driveway. We had a huge pot over a fire that all the scraps (ie scrapple) went into until it rendered down into breakfast heaven. I'd choose scrapple over bacon or sausage any day! The best scrapple comes from Maryland, Delaware, & Pennsylvania!

I've even had a 10 pound block shipped to California once.

In Covington, KY, they have something similar, I think: fried goetta. I'm not sure of the recipe but I imagine it's not much different.

(I don't believe I ever ate the stuff myself.)

I lived in Cinci for about a year and ate goetta. It's not even close in flavor.

Does anyone want to know what hotdogs are made of? I bet TC eats hotdogs. Lips and a$$holes and such. Not to scare anyone from hotdogs mind you :)

Last summer I was in Philly , and wanted to try a cheesteak sandwich. By the time the wife and kids got ready , we left town and I never did get to try one. I guess I could always get one somewhere else, and gamble whether or not its an original style or not.
