This is Dan, making a comment like that, "Mr. Will My Bike Go There Dan"? or "Can I Fall Off This Bridge, Dan"? or "Can I Fall Off This Cliff, Dan"? OKayyyyyyyyyyy, Right!

I have ridden with out hands before....but very briefly.
I don't think it's a good idea to cruise on down the highway with your hands in your pockets.
You never know if your gonna get a blow out or hit a rock or some irregularity in the road that can set off a progressive "high speed wobble"
Apparently ....the guy is comfortably riding like that....but not me.

It wasn't the hands free riding that makes me think of him as a Darwin Award Candidate, it's the hands in the pockets. We've all probably gone hands free from time to time, especially on the highway, but once you've survived a rear tire blow out at high speed with out a scratch or any damage to the bike, you really re-think how quickly you must be able to react. It happened to me in 1985 and I know that if I'd had my hands in my pockets, I wouldn't be here now to tell the story.

I don't see a problem with riding with no hands in low risk situations. I would never do this in traffic or when needing to change direction or speed substantially. Most of the near death situations I've encountered had nothing to do with riding with no hands. Most have been due to bone head decisions by me or other drivers in traffic. If you're cruising along on a nice smooth road with no traffic and want to sit back and let the bike run for a while, I don't see this as a major risk situation. The guy on the sport bike was looking for a thrill and probably does other high risk activity while riding. I think there is a difference.

No hands riding

My real thoughts on this is that hands in pockets is risky and needless; maybe they were cold?

I ride with no hands on mildly curvy canyon roads just to entertain myself with a challenge. I've only had an oh sh*t once doing that, and I've done it fairly often. Unfortunately, Valdez was there to witness it :) A too large truck (water truck of some kind) came around a corner in my lane.

So it is silly and needless to do, but to most of the public riding a bike at all is silly and needless, so we are only talking about a matter of degree here. Riding with no hands is further up the scale on the needless and silly scale.

A bike can be ridden with a fair amount of precision by a competant rider. I can go down a curvy mountain road with no hands. I can go about every other line on the broken line with no hands. So it can be done with some precision. But it is silly and needless. But for people with a need for more challenges, it's like on Spinal Tap and moving the dial to 11.

I usually fold my hands across my chest, not put them in my pockets.

Now the new guys know what the inside joke was :)

Just a thought, but isn't it physically impossible to turn the handlebars after about 25 miles an hour anyway?
