Yes, I found some directions, and youtube video on wrapping pipes. That was the #1 tip, start from exhaust end, soak in water, pull tight. I originally took mine off to have an O2 sensor bung welded onto the pipes. Wrapping was an afterthought, but I'm glad I did.

Lots of advocates for wrapping the pipes both here and on other forum's. I've seen youtube vid's explaining the procedure to varying degrees, but one question hasn't been answered... how exactly does this reduce the heat issue I'm having? Does it simply push the heat down the pipe and out with the exhaust more efficiently than a pipe that's not wrapped?

I know its a big engine, and I know its going to put off some heat. That doesn't bother me at all... its expected. I had a HD Street Glide a few years ago, and I've had two different Honda Valkyrie's which have the 1520cc Flat 6 engine, and they all put out a decent amount of heat at a stop light on a hot day. But this Vaquero is the first bike I've ever ridden that felt like it was burning my leg. Its not like I'm sitting there with my leg against the pipe or anything.

I'm just perplexed as to what do do. I don't have alot of money to deal with this issue.

You hit it on the head, Blakjack. The pipe-wrap helps contain the heat so it exits at the end of the pipe instead of radiating out along the length of the pipe. Huge improvement. While I haven't had the funds to do so myself, my understanding is that doing the "Big Three" will also reduce the heat from the engine itself by not running so lean.

Blakjack, I've got a cobra FI2000R that I'm not using right now that you can try. I had to send it back to Cobra with a bad pot and while they had it I picked up a PCV. Cobra put a new board in it.

If it helps we can work out a dirt cheap price. If it's doesnt then all it cost you was your time. Send me a PM if your intested and I can meet up with you somwhere.

Hey guys. New to the forum and just took my new Vaquero out for the maiden voyage yesterday. Temps were in the low 90s. Put about 70 miles on around town. The guage did get to the upper area until the fan kicked on. I did not notice any uncomfortable heat from the bike. I noticed that you had mentioned that the shop had checked things out and everything was OK. Maybe a second opinion would help?

Thumbs Up

My Autozone had 1 and 2 inch wrap for $29 and $39, enough to do a bike.
