Well that answers the question I don't have to ask now.

Over 40,000 miles on my 05 nomad and have had no issues with the shaft. Easy to maintain and don't have to worry about catching a rock in it. I change the fluid when called for. Have ridden bikes with both, don't necessarily have a preference but like the bike I have. If I have to replace the bike, who knows. Love the Kawis though and will probably still with them.

One of the reasons I went with our 2005 Nomad over the Road Star Silverado WAS the shaft drive. Loss of power... yeah, but pretty much worry free.
Change the fluid, and keep putting along....

That Road Star 1700 Silverado was peppy compared to the Nomad. The belt may have been a big factor. I think I still want one of them too.

Just curious, how many of you who claim shaft drives are "trouble free" have actually serviced them? They do need periodic service, other than simply changing the fluid.

Come on, don't you just pour a cup of oil in the final drive every 10K?

Servicing the shaft isn't too bad, but it's something that the majority of Nomads on the road have never had done. I do my own maintenance and enjoy it, so my shaft and swing-arm get serviced with every new rear tire.

The only down side I can see from a belt is the possibility of gravel getting jammed in the pulley and damaging the belt. But modern bikes all have good belt guards in place and I don't think this is a common problem anymore. CJ, how many miles on your HD? Any damage to your belt?

As far as belt wine or excessive noise, that's caused from your rear tire not being aligned correctly and/or your belt not being properly tightened.

I've had chain drive and never minded doing the little maintenance that was required. My first shaft drive was an 83' CX-650 Honda. Wonderful bike that moved along and had a great shaft drive. It was different from the chain drive but was really good on a trip..... smooth. Next bike was a Kawasaki 750 Vulcan with shaft drive and never had a problem with it and it rode smooth and no drive train noise. My Nomad has never given me a problem and when at the KawaNow Gathering in Maggie Valley I rode a Vaquero 1700 and did not care for the Noisy belt drive. Just my opinion but I do like shaft drive.

I actually changed the rear fluid in mine 3 times so far.
I have 85,000 miles on it.It is an 07.
So I would say it is trouble free.
Belts are for holding pants up, not driving motorcycles.

12,000 miles, no damage. Belt still looks brand new.

I have mine serviced along with the swing-arm every other tire change, which is about every 22k-25k miles...

I like shaft mostly because it's what I'm familiar with. I'm sure I'd be just as happy with belt.

It is getting to the point that we have to go belt if buying new.

A friend of mine just had his belt break on his HD Sporty. The belt just gave up and had no sign of ever being damaged. He sat on the side of the road for two hours waiting to get picked up by another friend with a trailer.

I found a few on ebay and Cycletrader that fit my criteria, but they were always in Florida or Texas. I considered myself very fortunate to have found one within a few hours of me--and with only 1,150 miles.
