I don't think this is a joke as I was also asked by my Doctor's nurse if I had gun in my home. As I asked what does this have to do with my visit to the Doctor. She couldn't answer or didn't want to and asked no more. My grandson went to have some shots and he was asked if they had any guns in his home. He is only 5 years old. He answered no but said his Grandfather had a bunch. He's never seen them though...... Wouldn't be surprised if this isn't something in Obamacare or HHS Secretary Sibelius has instructed Medical Professionals to gather this information. Just my thoughts........

I have the same thoughts, your and my kids are becoming the source of information never before being used or taken advantage of (well there was one time late 1930's thru mid 1940's). what they teach them is what they know.... unless you teach them better.

No, never. It's none of his or her business anyway.

May be it's an insurance company dealio or the state requires it.

Never been asked anything remotely like these questions; and I have seen a lot of doctors over the last 1 1/2 years with my back-issues.

I would think it would have come up if it was a requirement of sorts... I wouldn't answer them anyway if they had asked.

I still believe it to be spam email...

Unfortunately, there are plenty of people that get their information from crap like this that floats around, and then base their opinions and decisions upon it. No wonder this country is a mess.

I believe that it is a spam e-mail.
But it is odd that some, myself included, have been asked these or similar questions. Is it a state or insurance thing? I don't know, if I remember to ask them next time I'm in, I'll tell you what they say.

I really would like to know if, in fact, people are really being asked these questions.

I have no reason not to believe them if they say they have; but at the same time, it always seems when something as crazy as this gets "thrown-around" there is always someone standing-up to say "they" have seen it, heard it, experienced it, or heard the cousin of their friend's boyfriend whose next door neighbor had it happen to them.

Just saying Gerry... take what you hear with a grain of salt (preferably around the rim of a glass of Margaritas).

I can say for a fact when I checked into the hospital last May I was asked those questions in the ER. I remember thinking it was a little odd at the time. Frankly, I was so damn sick I really didn't care.

Just got back form a DR appt and remembered this thread. I asked him if it was a requirement in florida or a known requirement anywhere else.

LOL look on his face was priceless. He took the question wrong.

After answering some questions about depression and my mental health.

He explained it like this.

Personal Doctors should ask these questions if your on certain medication that can cause depression and/or suicidal thoughts.

Hospitals will routinely ask in an ER admittance as a way to grab background information. It isn't gun control or invasion of privacy but a way to look at your care if they have to give you meds that cause depression or suicidal thoughts. It also factors into getting a person baker acted.

Said it boiled down to much the same as doctors ordering tests to avoid lawsuits. (over prescribing) because if they give you a pill that causes depression and you hurt yourself or go nutz at a local mall they have opened themselves up to a lawsuit.

I got done and was walking out and realized he has never asked me these questions. I turned around and asked. How come you have never asked me, I have been seeing you for almost 4 years.

His answer. I know you have weapons and I dont ask dumb questions of my patients when they appear sane. I smiled and yelled HELL YEAH I AM SANE as I whistled down the hallway, to which he yelled after me.

Appearances can me deceiving, see you in 3 months

My son Bill is depressed that he is losing his eyesight. Cane's doc maybe right, maybe they want to know about weapons so they can warn you of suicidal tendencies with some meds. I was asked if I had them, probably because the meds I take can cause depression. So 'maybe' this is about the individual rather than an open practice of asking these type questions.

When I went to the hospital, I had an infection. I wasn't depressed at all. I wasn't on any medications at the time.
