Lane splitting is safe.

Yeah, riding like that is when I was young and dumb.

Lane splitting to me now is going 10 miles an hour, in stopped traffic jam situations.

Lane splitting is safe.

I wouldn't do it here. Too many lane hogs and CFs.

I have done it...years ago. Never again. Has anyone come up front and personal with a west coast mirror?

My thoughts exactly - my bike is too fat for me to want to try to squeeze between idiots in cars. :) With a narrow bike and done with care it should not be a problem but a Nomad may not be the perfect LA commute bike.

Lane splitting is safe.

Ever head of Frisco-style chopper?

They don't have the Fat rear tires and long rakes of "traditional" choppers.
Narrow bikes with short rakes can lane-share and make quick U-turns.
http://www.californiachoppers.com/history.html

So even if it IS legal, make sure you have the right bike.

IMHO, the forces of a side crash might be less fatal, but it would seem the occurence of a collision would be much more likely. So I don't necessarily draw the same conclusion of lane sharing being a safer alternative.
I've already replaced the horns on my Vaquero to make sure the lane drifter next to me knows I don't share and don't play well with others!

Just recently someone posted a suggestion of increasing your following distance to 3 seconds instead of 2. THAT SOUNDS SAFE!

That's not all they do. I see motor officers exiting the freeway on the off-ramp, then turning before the surface street and riding on the sidewalk across the overpass, then get back on the freeway. I'd get a ticket if I tried that.

My point was, if a HD could do it, a Nomad should be able to...

Lane splitting is safe.

Drivers out here in Lubbock can barely share a lane with themselves; that is, many demonstrate difficulty keeping their car/truck positioned within a given lane or in the lane at all.
