What would (should) you do?

That looks like my old Magna but mine didn't have a car sitting on top of it. As Bob said but if you can't get out of there then stick your head between your legs and kiss your a$$ good bye.

I pretty much do what Tom said. If you get hit you get punched to the side and if you see it coming (I always check the rear view mirror as I stop) you can accelerate away.

He is certainly one luck guy, I think Id drop the bike and run if I had a chance to. Unfortunately he ended up with a mangled lowrider.

+1

In my parking lot practice video, about 20 seconds in I start out about 3 feet behind a line (think truck in front of the bike in this conversation) and can turn past it in that much room if I'm leaving with the steering all the way to the stops.

Of course if you didn't turn back, you probably hit the car to the side of you, but that's better than getting sandwiched.

I probably stop too close to the car in front of me, but I know I can turn past it in just a few feet, but I probably on leave about 6-8 feet. I always think that if I see and hear a car screeching to a stop behind me, I'm hitting the gap. If the adrenaline is too much, and I bungle it and hit one of the cars to the side and in front of me, that is better than the alternative.

I think I could turn and shoot the gap as fast as I could dismount and run. You all might want to practice that turning to the stops and zig zag move in your parking lot practice just for this sort of thing.

Wow, that is some mighty fine riding Dan. Once I get my speedometer back in line, I am heading to a parking lot.

Without knowing the whole situation, all I can comment is,I typically leave at least 1/2 a car length between me and the guy in front of me and I ALWAYS watch behind me when I am stopping or sitting at an intersection.
There isn't a "standard" solution to this other than keep your guard up.

Hey Dan. I noticed something interesting in your video. When you do your figure 8's, you use the width of 4 parking spaces for the length of your 8. It looks like your 8 is somewhat elongated (not true circles on end).

When I practice, my 8's are 90 degrees to yours relative to the parking spaces. IOW, I use the width of 2 spaces (~20') and the full length of 2 spaces end to end. Essentially, I try to do my 8's in the space of 4 parking spaces (2 on each side and 2 end to end). It probably doesn't make much of a difference, but I'll try it your way for comparison.

Just an observation.

Markus, I think your way would be tighter and slower, mine would be longer and faster speeds.

I'll have to try your just for fun and comparison.

Dan,
I tried the figure 8s your way today. You're right... my way is a little tighter. I'll practice both ways for variety.

Wow....that's a Honda Magna....my guess is it's a 1998 model. I used to have one just like it, only black.

Oh and yes, I'd be in the back of that truck also.

I saw this earlier and just hope I never have to deal with it. I do watch my rear view mirrors very closely.

You can never become complacent when riding (although I do), because as soon as you do, that is when the unexpected will happen.

Another reason that I try and never be centered behind the vehicle in front of me. Sure, if you are centered you have the option of right or left, but you have to move a greater distance. I try and pick my escape route before I stop, and I am always in gear.

And the bike looks just like my son's, except his is not the "low rider" version.
