Riding in Crosswinds

I haven't been stopped by crosswinds yet. I've ridden across Wyoming and South Dakota in high winds and found the Nomad exceedingly stable. I rode 600+ miles one day when the weather service said the base wind was 40 mph with gusts up to 90. (Hard rain that day too.) At one point I turned into the wind while going up hill and had to down shift to 4th to hold my speed on the freeway. But the bike handled it well. So I didn't vote. I have not found a wind that caused me to stop riding. This is just another one of the great features of the Nomad. Way better in a crosswind than my Connie was. (But riding into a 30 mph wind really kills the mpg.)

Rode my first 35mph wind the other day. I think that is about the max I would want to ride. It's not bad in a steady wind but like they say when the gust hits or or a big truck blocks it then all of a sudden it hits you is rough to ride in.

If you are coming to Custer next year you may want to practice on days that are 20-30 sustained with gusts up to 40. That is not the norm but is not uncommon.

Zoom,

Riding on days such as that get easier the more you do them. However, they still wear a guy out by the end of the day.

Riding in Crosswinds

Wind speed has never stopped me from riding. Although on my daily commute I cross three bridges, two as I approach and depart the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel and both are open to the Chesapeake Bay and the guests can be very unfriendly. As long as I keep alert to the traffic around me I do alright in maintaing my lane. Still can wear a person out pretty quick.
