Aha, I found this on the CA DMV website:

If you are a California resident and acquire a new car, truck or motorcycle from another state, it must be certified to meet California smog laws in order to be registered here. This includes certain diesel powered vehicles. DMV cannot accept an application to register a vehicle in California that does not qualify for registration (Health and Safety Codes [H&SC] §§43150 – 43156.)
What Is Considered a new Vehicle?

California considers any vehicle with less than 7,500 miles on the odometer at the time of purchase or trade by a California resident or business to be a new vehicle. This holds true whether or not the vehicle has been registered in another state.

That's where the 7,500 miles came from. I take it to mean that if you attempt to bring a vehicle in from out of state, if it has less than 7500 miles, it is considered NEW. New vehicles have to be CA emissions compliant. So If you buy a new bike from AZ, NV, or some other state, it needs to have CA emissions, not 49 state. Apparently, a used vehicle does not have to meet that standard?

Keep in mind that dealerships in CA have to charge you sales tax, registration, etc. as part of the out the door cost. A dealership outside of CA doesn't. A $22K bike at 8.25% (Lakewood sales tax) is going to cost you close to $2K in just sales tax. If you purchase the bike elsewhere, you'll have to pay that in one large sum when you got it home and you couldn't role it into a loan.

If you use the manufacturer's finance company, they will roll in your home state tax as long as they do business in your home state.

For instance, BMWs are 50 state bikes, so they are good in any state without remediation.

Sometimes. I bought my 2007 Nomad from a dealer in Phoenix and it was a CA emissions bike.

I ought to check and see if my Ultra has CA emissions.

The bike I'm looking at is "50 states".

Ponce i was told to contact the dealer to see if they tax and doc in the state you live in. Supposedly most dealers do on 50 state vehicles.
