Unplanned off road excursion

Stan,
Thanks for sharing and I have to admit....I'm one of those t-shirt and vest guys. Might have to invest in a mesh jacket of some sort. At my age....you would think I could learn from someone else's good idea's. Rick tells me all the time I should wear one, but I don't have one and leather is just too damn hot on a warm day. Hope you heal up quick and get another bike soon. You'll need one for next year's rally... ;)!

My leathers regularly come off in hot weather. I'm already shopping for open mesh armour for Phoenix. I've had a total of 5 motorcycle crashes (1 off road + 4 street/highway). And still ride gearless on occasion. Still can't decide if it's crazy or just stupid. . . maybe both?

Sin City, like all the others who posted, I am sorry for your mishap and happy you both are OK. Don't dwell on the accident, heal fast and complete.
Good health to you and yours.

Unplanned off road excursion

A good write-up Stan.

I have one additional suggestion to all.

Get a GPS and learn to use it in determining the curves ahead of you. Once you get "zeroed-in" on it; you'll have a heads-up on what to expect around the corner.

This is the main-function of my GPS when riding; because I love riding twisted roads and the GPS helps a lot in setting-up for curves.

Doing this has saved me many times.

140 miles of curves would definitely be one of my favorite to ride; and a GPS helps.

Just my two-cent addition to the conversation... ;)

Greg, that is exactly what I do. The problem is that my GPS would zoom out every so often and on that road it could be 2-3 minutes before you could direct attention to it to zoom it back down. Needless to say it was zoomed way to far out as I approached that curve and was no help.

As far as a favorite to ride. Be careful what you wish for. Pushing a big bike around continuous curves will get a bit old after 140 miles. ;) Ask Scott.

I have never heard of the road.
But since you and Scott were both on it,
I'm guessing it's well known to motorcyclist?

I mean you didn't end up taking it without prior knowledge of it?

Just curious....

Heard about the road about a week before we left. Let's say one trip down it on a heavy bike is enough. However, on something smaller, faster and more nimble, be it a car or bike I'd go for it again.

Wow... that's interesting. Mine doesn't do that... which I guess is a good thing.

Regarding miles of twisting road... I know what you mean; but I still like them -- even on a heavy-bike.

We had that type of riding down in Maggie Valley all day every day. I actually loved it; but can see where some might not.

There is only a few roads in Vermont that are not real curvy. So I guess most of us here would probably think nothing of a road like that.

I agree about a heavy bike and miles of sharp curves.
I've found myself in the Ozarks tired both mentally and physically from constant tight turns.
140 miles would be all I would want. Then some sweepers would be nice.
And your right Greg, it seemed every road near MV was crooked as a snake.

I had a similar crash on June 13th on the tail of the dragon. I don't think I was going over 20 MPH but everything just sort of dropped out from under me. My Nomad ended up headed the other way too. No major injuries, only road rash on one forearm and a giant bruise all the way around my right leg at the knee.

Your write up and photos were great! Get well soon!

Stan,

It's good to see you up and about. I finally got a chance to read this. You guys look lucky. I took a look at this road on maps.google and it is one long wiggle of a road on the map.

Stan, thanks for the deatils. Glad you and the better half were not hurt worse. Sorry I did not get a chance to meet both of you at the rally.

The details you provided will help all of us be better riders.
