If the service says 3.5 qt of oil with a filter change and you put in 4qt without a filter change, the sight glass is not going to show the dividing line between the oil and the space above. It is so full that it looks like there is nothing in it.With is no filter change in your case so lookes like you need to take out about 1qt of oil to see the oil level.

Any chance what you're seeing is an over filled site glass and just can't tell?

If it's empty, you should be able to easily see the two vertical just inside the glass without any color or discoloration

(Stole pic from the web)

I too have drained my oil from both locations, replaced filter with a larger filter, and still can't get 4 quarts in.

With my 07 Nomad on level ground and the bike leveled up ( I place a brick under the kick stand) and the bike setting over night, is the correct oil level indicated with the glass showing half full?

I am checking the bike level and after putting in 4 quarts the line is between the low and high. I can clearly see the oil as it moves when I tip the bike. It is just a mystery as to where the oil is? Just got back from a 125 mile ride and runs like a top! SO?????????????????/

I have been using 3.5 qts in mine as well... The first time I changed I used way more than that (Luckily didn't do any damage). Did you take off the oil filter when draining the oil or did you leave it on?

Well, I'd personally fill it up until it was at the proper level regardless.

When you do an oil change with a filter change normally you start the bike to fill the oil filter before checking the oil level. In this case he did not change the filter, so it was still full of oil and not an issue.

I think I will do that. I was just really curious as to why it was taking so much.

Am I the only one that mastered putting the Nomad in gear standing on the brake side of the bike and while holding the right grip stand the bike up to the balancing point and seeing the site glass easily??? I should have been a brain surgeon!

Maybe those having difficulty are chewing gum at the same time?

I don't have an issue either, does that make us the three bears?.

I put a 2x4 under the side stand so the bike is a bit more upright and easier to pull upright. I then kneel down on one knee on the right side of the bike, pull it up straight with the passenger handhold and the handle bar, tilt my head down a bit and I am pretty much level with the sight glass.

I use the, hey you, technique to check my oil. I do not have to strain my eyes or contort my body to hold the Nomad with my eyes at knee level.

I holler at someone walking by, or someone waiting to ride, and tell them to watch the sight glass and tell me when you see oil. Then I just gently lean the bike and wait for them to holler. Be sure to tell them what a good job they did.
