Damn right, I'm ready. Anywhere but Custer. Little too far for me.

Heading over to Ark & Mo June 10th for 5 days.....if anybody's interested.

Leeanne and I just got back from a 3,700 mile trip through the southeast as far as Washington DC. This included Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia and Virginia. We rode mostly back roads, but some interstate due to commitments for weddings and graduations.

So - here's my $.02 too. For the Florida folks, Virginia is a push unless a fair amount of interstate riding is planned. If the time schedule is 10 days [2 weekends and the week in between] then Virginia and the valley is a wonderful trip. We road two and a half days coming back from DC. It was mostly 59-60 degrees and the wind was brutal.

Keep in mind that if we go during the same time of year as the Helen trip the temperatures can be a bit colder. Long distances in 40 degree weather may not be fun for everyone.

We try to practice the "it's the journey" riding style and would like to stop and see some sites along the way. There is a great book for the motorcycle enthusiast that chronicles some great riding throughout the southeast [rest of US too]. Let me know if your interested and I'll get the title to you.

happy and safe riding,

Jim

Thanks for the .02 Jim.

Your right, it will be a push for the Florida group and I'm prepared to take the time off work. However, others of us may not be able to.

I think I'll play it by ear. I'm more than happy going anywhere the group wants.

Sounds like you had a good trip, did you take some pictures?

Would it be better to do a mid week Rally? That would allow for previous and following weekends for travel.

The only problem with that is that not everyone will want to burn their vacation time for this event.

I didn't mean to rain on any of the idea's. Just sharing from my book of riding experience. Like Mike, I'm looking forward to our next "event" and the ride!

Having said that, my ear will be waiting and we'll see what happens as well. As was well said by someone, Leeanne and I are thrilled to ride outside Florida, just to see something different.

While in Kentucky, I slept to the howls from coyote's while in the Buckhorn State Park. Mike, Lee took some pictures and soon as I get back on track, I will post.

Goose, I think we will have to reopen that once we decide on a site. I really think that would take some of the pressure off of travel for the southern folks. If we started it like the National, Tuesday and ended on Thursday, it would give everyone 3 days both ways. Someone like Wayne or Joe that has a good 3 day ride, would have to take a week off but could start on Saturday and take their time...sniff some flowers along the way.

Personally, I think that is the way to approach it if possible.

Anybody local to VA know the cost of travelling on the Skyline roadway? Just curious about getting around up there if it's decided to stay at the Big Meadows lodge......

Hey poppy, It cost $10 per motorcycle to enter Skyline Drive. That's a 7 day pass. The Blue Ridge parkway is free. I checked the Big Meadows web and it cost $95 per night (2 dbl bds). I think that we would have to make reservations well in advance. It's 14 miles from Rt. 33 and anyone deciding later to go to the rally would have to get rooms 20 - 30 miles away.

Thanks for the information. A 7 day pass for $10 is great and it does make sense to stay at the lodge!

If we stayed at the Lodge, anyone deciding closer to the date to attend the rally and didn't have reservations, wouldn't be able to stay anywhere near the group that was at the Lodge. I think the nearest motel is 20-30 miles away from the Lodge. I feel the Lodge would be a nice stay but maybe not the best pick.
