We used to have a rope, about fifty feet long tied around the steering column, with a javax bottle tied to the other end as a floating marker.
Ive gone down in about twenty feet of water but usually its only five to ten feet deep. At the pro events they hook onto the sled with a long pole and a hook and haul them out. When they go down in really deep water, they send a diver down to get it out.

Norm I don't know about crossing the water but I can see myself doing some of that next winter. I'm planning a move up north to the 108 Ranch,...{I bought a place but might just use it for recreational for a yr. or two unless I retire before hand},....and a couple of snowmobiles are in my future. I'll probably stick to the trails though. At least when my wife is with me.

It is kinda like bikes, once your have had one you always have a fondness for them.
