And if I'm reading correctly, what a lot of you have decided, is twisting the head stem nut to about 15 ft. pounds ?

I did this back in August. I got my races out by first grinding a scallop in 3 places on the top side of the race as you see in the pic. I got it deep enough that I could get a long screwdriver/drift pin from the top. I used a cone grinding head on my dremel and once you get it going it cuts pretty good. Few good whacks with the driver rotating around the race and it will pop out. I did the same thing for the top race as well.

Just clean the shytz out of it when your done as the chips left around will not be good on the bearings. I sprayed carb cleaner from the top and used air to get them out of there.

I used a small 2x4 to start the race back in the frame, then used the old race flipped upside down to drive it home.
You can see the condition of my brng from the previous owner... UGHH

Tighten lower stem nut & steering stem nut to the specs in the book for your individual bike....
Just let me say this, once your bearings are replaced, if you install a zerk fitting, you'll never ever have to disassemble again for lube....

That looks like water damage. Once you replace them and install the grease fitting. Use a good water proof grease. Mine is an 02 150,000 miles with original bearings. As Dragonlady58 says, You'll never have to do it again.
