Ok, just a suggestion. Check with the bike vertical, get the right level. Then check when on the side stand, so you know what it will be that way. Then, you don't have to always make it level when you check it.

Got to be a reason they want it upright. If it was as simple as finding the right spot while on it's side stand I would hope they would have just done that for us and put the marks on the dip stick in a different spot.
It's going to be one of those great mysteries I think. |

I feel as long as the level is right when vertical. if you have it on the side stand, and know where it is, you should be fine.

I put 5 qts at oil change, check a few times after running engine then forget about it for 5000 miles. Doesnt burn or leak oil. That is one of the reasons we ride Kawasaki.

I put 5 Qts US in at oil change with a new oil filter. No oil in the air filter. I check it on the side stand.

A center stand makes it a lot easier.

a ..small.. beef, I have about my 02 Nomad, is the sight window for checking the oil level
I like "Dip-Sticks"....how much oil do these bikes take anyway....? I started out at 3 1/2 qt's(us)...then was advised to use 4 qt's...now highwayman 2011, is saying he uses 5qt's ? .....I sure could use a DIP-STICK ! |

Yes, the sight glass on the 1500/1600 can be a pain with the stock exhaust, but it works and to be honest, my 1600 never used much oil if at all. My BMW is another thing…Takes forever for those boxer engines to break in. Still have the sight glass on that too, but it has a center stand and an oil level sensor too, so if it gets a half a quart low, it will let me know, but I usually check it often enough that it doesn't matter.

See, and everyone thought this was such a simple question. Funny thing is, at the VROC rally this weekend, someone said to me............."so how do you check our oil level?"...................its funny you asked that..
LOL
