Stebel and habits paid off this morning

I almost ride next to the driver's window. I don't want to be in a blind spot, I want them to feel my presence. Granted I don't ride in traffic like some of you, but if they don't see you, you can expect they will drive over you. Some day even that loud horn will fail you. JMO.
In theory, you are correct. In practice, you cannot trust that drivers can see you even when you think you are in the middle of their mirror. The following video is an example of perception.

If the driver is looking for cars or trucks, you might be invisible. They might look right through you to see the vehicle trailing you.

I try never to cruise side by side with another vehicle. If I cannot pass quickly, I will keep my front wheel at least slightly behind the car's rear bumper. If that car swerves into my lane, it looks close, but it cannot hurt me.

Even if the driver knows you are there, a kid's scream from the back seat, a cell phone ring, a bee buzzing around can momentarily distract a driver enough to veer that car into your lane, and you never know when that veer is coming.

For me, the extra several feet of buffer room protects against surprise situations.

I too ride left of center in the right lane etc. And I always ride with the the amber driving lights on. I try to see them eye to eye in their side rear view, be it on the left side of them or the right. Plus you still have the escape room across the remainder of the lane allowing just a bit more reaction time to hit that Stebel button should they still start moving my way.

I ride left of center no matter what lane I am in. That is just where I am most comfortable.
But, I never ride next to another vehicle. I stay back enough to miss him/her if they come into my lane or I go past them quickly.

Stebel and habits paid off this morning

Coming home on Sunday we were in the hammer lane as a line of car were coming on from a ramp. Elaine was in front of me and after she passed a car he put his turn signal on. Thinking this person was going to pull into my lane to pass the cars in front of him. I Hit the stebel horn not giving him a chance to start moving over on me and he turned his signal off. As I was passing him I looked over but he totally ignored me. If it wasn't for the stebel he would of came over.

I need to put one Elaine's bike

I had the stebel addition on my fall "to do" list, but since my 2nd factory horn has crapped out I'll have to move it up since my safety inspection is due next month.

That's the way I ride too, Loafer, and how I train new riders. Also like Bob, never stay beside a car and if the traffic makes me be beside one, I stay slightly ahead of their window, so they can see me well.

I also keep my bright lights on all the time, day or night.

If I'm in traffic heavy enough to keep me from passing, I stay in a position that I can spit in the cagers face if need be. They always know that I'm there. Sometimes just making pretend to pick a boogah and your looking for a place to flick it, is enough for some of them, to give me my space. But that's just me.

Thanks Schoeney.

On that link, there is three pages, with three different but similiar Stebel horns, but page two and three are two, or dual horns. These Stebels are different than others I've looked at, as these do not have the "compressor", yet show they also are 139db.

Can this be correct without the compressor? You can't beat the price on any of them. Which one did you get? The dual horns are kind of neat, as one is a "low" tone and the other is a "high" tone.

Correct TC, that is why I wondering how the Stebel Magnums hold up against the Nautilus. They both are 139db, one has a compressor the other doesn't. So, are they equally as loud? If so, the Magnums look like they would fit better on the Nomad, in physical size they look the same as a stock horn.

OK I see. It would seem to me 139 db is 139 db.
Should be the same loudness.

Well, I would think you are right, TC. 139 is 139, but I was wondering if maybe the compressor maybe sent the sound waves out faster or stronger, you know what I'm trying to say?
