If I ride my bike every few days it stays charged. One way I can tell if my charging system is working other than the volt meter on the bike is when I come back and plug in the charger and it goes to solid green (100%). Then I'm sure its fully charged.

I've been reading a lot online from battery sites and learned a few things about battery's. I have an AGM battery and it should not of have lost cranking power that easily especially plugged into a battery tender and yes i checked the model # of my tender and is good for AGM battery's. The battery tested 13.6 volts and still won't start the bike BUT after jumping from another battery and letting the bike warm up until the fan came on i was able to start the bike a few hours later with out a jump. I think i might have a bad battery. Testing the battery with the bike running proofs the bikes charging system works at 14.5 volts and when the bike is of the battery tests at 13.6 so everything god their. Testing with the tender on also tests over 14 volts and drops down immediately when shut off. Tender is working OK.
But when i test the battery without the tender hooked up and the bike not running i will get about 13.56---turn the key on but do not start the bike and watch the meter slowly go down from .56 to .55 to .54 about every 8 seconds or so is above my knowledge level and i know the bike is drawing because the key is on but should it still be depleting the battery that quickly? Especially an AGM battery. So this is what i'm going to do today try and start the bike, if it starts plug the tender back in for another day and light should be green very soon. Remove the tender for a week and test the battery with the meter every day. If it drops down daily i have a bad battery or a short. If it doesn't drop down and at the end of a week the bike won't start i have a bad battery and it's going back to the dealer for a load test. I'll know more by the end of the week. |

get a battery tender 1.25A like this one in the link, and get one that comes with the pigtail connector for the bike battery hookup leads, this one might come with the pigtail I didn't look closely enough at it. you will ruin your bike battery with the high amp auto chargers so use this 1.25 amp tender, and you can also use this 1.25 amp tender on your cars and trucks, the lower amps does a better charge than those high amp auto-chargers do and with this tender you will not run the risk of over charging your batteries on all your vehicles

To answer degreaser's last post a want to clear up any confusion about my post, when i use the term battery tender in my posts i am referring to an actual Deltran battery tender made for the bikes with the pig tail on the battery i have had this set up on this bike for the past 10 years. I also have a voyager in the garage and a small lawn tractor battery in the garage that use the same tender on them, i swap from bike to bike to battery every couple of weeks. The voyager and the tractor battery all stay charged up well even after a few weeks with out the tender on it while i am using it on the other 2 but the nomad with the new battery is losing a charge fast so now i'm monitoring it daily with out the tender hooker up. Hope this clarifies things up.

Most battery chargers are just trickle chargers. If you get the deltran that is a battery maintainer it will actually shutoff when full charge is reached. That’s the difference between a trickle charger and a battery maintainer. If you buy the deltran that works with lithium batteries it will be better for your battery.

Because when it hits 100% charged it shuts off. It doesn’t keep charging. It monitors and when it drops below 100% it turns back on.

it's better because of the 1.25 amp low rate charge which is better
