The links may have moved on the shifter shaft. I had one strip out after the bolt backed off and played hell getting it to shift into second gear. There is a mark on both the shaft and the link and if those marks are not perfectly lined up it will not shift into second.

There is a neutral finder and if the bike is stopped running or not you will not get it into 2nd. A low speeds you get 1st and neutral, unless you happened to stop in 2nd in which case you will think you dropped 1st gear.... The first time i did that i was 1/2 way across the country and thought the tranny was mashed... I stopped in 2nd, and could not get 1st untill i lugged off around the block and went to 3rd and then 2nd, then 1st downshifting.. That neutral finder is a blessing or it is Hell.

It didn't matter running or not. It would shift into 1st and neutral but that's it. It came apart on me at the 2010 Myrtal Beach Bike Week while cursing the strip.

I'm having the same issue.... kinda... I did an oil change on my 2000 Vulcan nomad 1500 L and rode it about 40 miles before I lost all gears. I took it home brought in my shop and took the right side cover off to examine the clutches just to find that the main nut fell off. I ordered new clutches anyways and started to tear it down to find the 3 washer Springs put in incorrectly. After I replaced all the clutches and put the Springs in correctly I started the bike To find I only have 1st year. Fresh or oil new clutches I don't know what happened. Could I have damaged something when that nut fell off? Please any help is much appreciated
