cold air

Well, my Voyager really, really likes cold air. Took her to the dealership to get the recall done, it was 8 Celsius. Zero hesitation in the low 2000's, no stumble, no delay when on-throttle.

Wish she ran like this in hot weather without me having to do a bunch of mods.

Have you added a manual fan switch. I did it this spring and it made a world of difference. I did 3 trips into BC this summer and it kept the temps around half way on the gauge in the hottest weather when in slower traffic.

nope - not YET.

Does keeping her a bit cooler help with the overall performance in hot weather?

My understanding is the colder the air, the more oxygen density, therefore you get better combustion. The ECU probably dumps a little more fuel in to compensate for the air density which is why the bike feels smoother otherwise you would run slightly on the lean side. Plus an engine that is cooler will always perform better than an engine that is heat soaked.

I find the same thing with mine as well. Your explanation Ken makes good sense. I did read a thread that explained moving the Temp sensor out from the inside of the air cleaner would help. I've been doing a little research on moving it but finding the right location is the key.

I'm also debating on doing the fan switch mod as well.

By next summer I will do the fan switch. The South FL summer killed me this year. Always looked like I peed my pants after a ride with the heat. I will use the left side dog bowl housing to mount a LED switch since it is not functional after installing Chucksters BAK.

I'll bet it gets very hot down there !!! I love the few hot days we here but my bike doesn't. Can you tell me if the fan still does come on automatically even with the switch installed ? I'd hate to have to manually monitor it without a temp gauge. Since doing the Baron key relocation I plan on putting a led switch just below the fast idle knob and the ignition. Easy reach . I will definitely have to do some research before attacking this mod.

By the way , love the Vaq . I sit on that one every time I go to the dealer . Something about that orange/flame that gets to me. If I ever get bored of my 01 I may just take it home.

Hey Ken have you looked into heat shields/deflectors? I got a set on line without any issues from the USA @ RJS Originals (no more fried thighs), easy install and worked great..noticed the difference right away. That being said, its not as hot here in Ontario Canada as in South FL but I would think you'd still find some relief with these. Cheers

I am not sure about the older model Nomads. On the 1700 the fan will still come on automatically if the switch is off. The switch simply acts as a bridge to turn the fan on manually. It is tapped into the relay wire that sends the signal from the ECU to turn the fan on when things heat up. It does not interupt that signal.

I saw those up close at an event last year. Thought they were a little pricey. I think the fan override is a more viable option in keeping the temps down.
