Self Cancelling Turn Signals

Greetings all-

2007 Nomad- has anyone out there tried to disable the self cancelling feature on the directionals? There are times when I'd like them to stay on longer than they do. What cancels them- is it distance? Time?

Thanks everyone in advance.

I'm pretty sure it's distance.

Get to the turn signal relay, right side cover under the coolant reservoir. There is a blue wire going to it that is the distance trigger, unhook that wire and you will be all set.

Why not just hit the signal button one more time
That way you don't have to worry about shutting it off after the turn and some yahoo hitting you because he thought you were turning later on down the road.

Thanks tonik- I will look for that blue wire. I figured it must be distance related vs time.

Top Cat- that's what I've been doing is hitting the turn signal switch several times to keep it from shutting off. I suppose either way I'll have to remember to do something to hopefully keep from getting drilled.

I wonder what kind of signal it is on the blue wire. Maybe a resistor would change the time.

I THINK it is a straight signal from the ECU or the Speedo and that either time or distance trigger it depending upon your speed.

I don't have a manual for the 1600 but the 1500 and 1700 manuals say:

The canceling system consists of a battery, turn signal control unit, distance sensor, and turn signal switch. When the turn signal switch is pushed onto the right or left, the turn signals start flashing and the control unit starts counting off 8 seconds. At the end of this time. the control unit starts caluculating distance traveled using pulses Irom the distance sensor In the speedometer. When the motorcycle has traveled an additional 65 meters. the control unit shuts off the current and turns off the turn signal lights. The turn signal switch lever is returned to the neutral position by spring force.

All of the circuitry for cancelling the signals is located in the flasher unit. Someone posted once that you can just replace the flasher with a standard auto flasher and the self-cancelling is eliminated.

Of course, you then have to remember to turn them off manually everytime.

I agree with Top Cat. There are times I want mine on longer than 150(approx.) feet so I just hit the button again.

Seems like too much hassle for the misc occasion you want them on for a few seconds longer.

I used to get so pissed off following my brother when he had a bike with non cancelling turn signals. He would put the signal on, make a turn and forget it sometimes for several miles, I then had no warning when his next turn would be and suddenly we are turning.
Frustrating to be behind and sometimes dangerous, just saying.

When my speedo broke a couple seasons ago the self canceling feature stopped working until the speedo unit was replaced.

Thanks everyone for the input. I think I'm going to skip on bypassing the circuit for now. Saw the relay and wires behind the radiator overflow and decided not to start cutting/pulling any wires. For the few times i need the directionals to stay on a bit longer I'll just keep hitting the switch and hope people are paying attention (always a gamble!).

Always enlightening conversation on this board! You never leave here without learning something.

Ride safe, everybody.
